Friday, December 10th, finds the Los Angeles Lakers playing the Oklahoma City Thunder squad for the third time this season.
In the prior meetings, the Thunder won both rallying to erase a 26 point deficit on October 27th (123-115) and a 19 point deficit on November 4th (107-104)
The Lakers arrive on the second game of a back-to-back set having lost 95-108 to a severely shorthanded Grizzlies squad on Thursday. while the Thunder erased a double-digit deficit and held on to win played Wednesday losing to/defeating the Raptors.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Lakers winning all three contests. The Lakers hold the all-time record having bested the Thunder in 149 of their 258 matches.
Los Angeles Lakers
When the Lakers couldn’t hold onto a 26 point lead over the Thunder the takeaway was LeBron James wasn’t playing and the Lakers were still developing chemistry. Eight days later when deja vu occurred this time by 19 points it was wash, rinse repeat.
So it’s sort of comical when the Thunder posted the worst loss in history many of the same talking heads suggested the Thunder should be punished for tanking.
How ironic a team with Anthony Davis and Russell Weskbrook should be afforded patience and a pass because LBJ was missing but the Thunder who were playing without arguably three of their top four players shouldn’t receive even an iota of the same leeway.
The Lakers look their age in the game versus Memphis not able to keep up with their speed or athleticism. LeBron James registered a triple-double (20 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists) while Anthony Davis scored 22 points with eight rebounds.
LA turned the ball over 22 times leading to 27 points and also lost the glass (47 to 45) and paint battles (47 to 44).
Oklahoma City Thunder
Raptors coach Nick Nurse is also the Canadian National team coach and has witnessed several of the players he coached this past summer have big performances against the Raptors.
Andrew Wiggins posted 32 points tying Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s record for most points scored by a Canadian versus the Raptors. RJ Barrett scored 27 with five 3-pointers and is in Toronto tonight on a current hot shooting streak.
Lu Dort was a Nurse favorite this summer and if SGA hadn’t been injured he would’ve joined his cousin Nickeil Alexander-Walker on that National team.
With family from Hamilton and Montreal in attendance on Wednesday, the duo put on a show for them and Nurse. Fred VanVleet scored 19 points but was held to four points through three quarters with Lu the Beast locking him down while also scoring 22 points.
SGA had a game-high 26 points shooting a perfect 12 of 12 from the charity stripe with nine assists. In fact, it was an SGA assist that was the play of the game as the Raptors collapsed on him and he found a wide-open Mike Muscala for the winning bucket.
OKC outscored Toronto 33 to 12 in the third quarter but still had to hold on for the win. The final play was dramatic as the Raptors thought Justin Champagnie’s tip shot won the match but video proved the ball was still on his fingertips as time expired. millisecond too late.
It was the second win in a row for OKC (Pistons) both erasing double-digit deficits.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Lakers are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Thunder are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Prediction:
It seems utterly untenable the Thunder could beat the Lakers three games in a row but while OKC doesn’t have the personnel to defend Davis, the Lakers are hard-pressed to deal with SGA and have the same athleticism that cost LA the game versus the Grizz.
James and Davis played 37 and 38 minutes while the Thunder were at home in OKC resting up for this match. I
‘m assuming the whistle will favor the Lakers but I like the Thunder to cover and what a great message it would send the pundits who called them trash a week ago if they could beat LA three times in a row.
