These teams just met a couple of days ago in Memphis. The Lakers winning 108-94.
The Lakers are looking pretty good so far. Beyond LeBron and AD, this is a different team than the one that won last year.
Memphis is dealing with significant injuries right now, affecting their talent and depth.
Los Angeles Lakers
Since dropping the opening game of the season to the Clippers the Lakers have gone 5-1.
They have some minor injuries right now with Alex Caruso and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope out but they have more than enough depth to cover for those ones.
With KCP out Kyle Kuzma slides into the starting lineup. He is a more dangerous player and his length makes their defense even more formidable.
LeBron James remains one of the most impactful players in the league. He led the league in assists last season.
Anthony Davis’ numbers are also a bit down but neither player is playing significant minutes so far this season. He is making over 50% of his shots overall and more than 40% of his three so he is looking pretty good.
Montrezl Harrell was the big acquisition to spice up the bench production. His 13ppg might be all that he can muster with the Lakers who are more sensitive to his defensive limitations than the Clippers were.
Off the recent win, there is no reason why the Lakers can’t grab another before they leave Memphis.
Memphis Grizzlies
Ja Morant is out til next month. The Grizzlies are hoping they can hang in there so that when he returns they can play well enough to get the team into the playoffs.
So far the results have not been there. His direct replacement is Tyus Jones, a former Duke PG who have never really found a role or success in the NBA.
Morant is the engine for the Grizzlies. He is their best offensive player, creator, and the guy who gives them some sense of a defensive presence. Jones might be able to fill one of those roles, but he can’t do it all.
I like the general trajectory and the makeup of this team but injuries have hit them hard to start the season. Rookie Desmond Bane has scored in double-figures in the last three games and is showing some promise. Starting him might be the move to make.
