Sunday, February 28th finds the Los Angeles Clippers and the Milwaukee Bucks meeting for the first time in the 2020-21 campaign.
The Bucks hold the all-time record between the clubs with 67 wins in 119 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice with the Bucks taking both contests.
Los Angeles Clippers
Payback was in the mix on a back-to-back featuring the same team (Memphis Grizzlies) who dismantled them a night prior.
Frankly, it was expected (as per my prediction) that Kawhi Leonard would rally his team and come back for the victory and do it in a decisive fashion which is precisely what happened.
After allowing 72 points in the paint in the prior game loss to Memphis, the Clippers made a concentrated effort to pack the paint. Although the Grizzlies still scored 54 points in the paint they lead the league in this area so no team is going to stop them completely.
Defensive intensity was another key as the Grizzlies shot 54. 3% from the field and 57.9% from deep in the first game but LA upped their effort equating to major improvements in game two. Specifically, Memphis shot 40.2% from the field and 32.1% from the perimeter.
All five Clipper starters plus two reserves scored in double-figures led by Leonard who registered 30 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and a block.
Lou Williams (17), Paul George (13) Nic Batum (13), Terance Mann (13), Serge Ibaka (12), and Patrick Beverley (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Patrick Patterson (personal) missed the last two games and is questionable for Sunday.
Milwaukee Bucks
The past few weeks have showcased how lopsided this season has been from a typical campaign with elite clubs experiencing losing streaks longer than typical and in some cases years.
The Bucks are the perfect example as they began February on a five-game win streak followed by their first five-game losing streak in four seasons. They enter the match Sunday on another winning streak of four in a row.
Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t in the MVP conversation to threepeat this season and his Bucks who’ve finished with the best record the past two seasons reside in third in the East and seventh overall.
Yet the party line is the Bucks aren’t dominating by design. The Raptors exposed how to defend Giannis two years ago and Miami used the same technique to bounce the Bucks last season. So the emphasis this season is adapting.
Following the 128-124 win versus the Pelicans Antetokounmpo spoke about the difference this year.
“Last two years, we were beating teams by 15, by 20, by 30, but at the end of the day, that did not make us better,” Antetokounmpo said. “I think when you’re getting a game every single night, it’s a dogfight, you fight to win, it helps you. It helps you in the long run, we build good habits and hopefully it can help us in the playoffs.”
It’s a wise point but other than a few defensive tweaks the Bucks are still playing precisely the same way.
Holiday (safety protocols) has missed 10 games while Jordan Nwora (ankle), D.J. Augustin (personal), and Jaylen Adams (safety protocols) are all day-to-day.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The Clippers are 6-3-1 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Los Angeles Clippers vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction:
Of the 16 current playoff seeds the Bucks have played they are 6-10. Moreover, former Raptors Kawhi Leonard and Serge Ibaka were integral parts of the successful Antetokounmpo defense.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Clippers +2
Unless Holiday returns the Clippers have the decided edge and even if the Bucks star is back I like LAC in this match based on Milwaukee’s win percentage versus playoff seeds.
