Monday, December 6th finds the LA Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers tipping off in their first meeting of the 2021-22 season.
Both teams last played on Saturday with each team lost with the Clippers falling 99-104 to the Kings while the Blazers were soundly beaten 117-145 by the Celtics.
The Blazers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 148 wins in 234 meetings. Last season, the teams played three times with the Clippers winning two of the three contests.
LA Clippers
For the second time in four days, the Sacramento Kings defeated the Clippers. Marcus Morris Sr. was the top scorer for LA with 21 points and flirted with a double-double pulling down nine boards.
Paul George and Ivica Zubac did collect double-doubles with PG scoring 15 points along with 10 assists plus six rebounds, and two steals but he shot poorly (5 of 21). Zubac scored 12 points with 11 rebounds.
The other double-figure contributors were Reggie Jackson with 18 points and Luke Kennard with 12 points.
During the Clippers seven-game winning streak they climbed to the top of the leaderboard for perimeter efficiency but have slipped back to 11th (35.1%) and during the last ten games rank 16th in 3-point efficiency (35.3%).
They fared better against the Kings (38.2%) but weren’t able to contain the Kings overall
Jason Preston (foot) missed the game Saturday and has been downgraded to out on Monday. Nicolas Batum (illness) is out indefinitely. Kawhi Leonard (knee) continues to rehab from surgery to repair a torn ACL.
Portland Trail Blazers
The match versus the Celtics got out of hand quickly with Boston building a 15-point first-quarter lead then cementing it with another strong quarter in the third which they won 39-26.
Given the disparity, Chauncey Billups went frequently to his reserves trying to find answers but the Celtics bench outscored the Blazers 51 to 37.
CJ McCollum was the top Blazers producer with 24 points and six assists. With both Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons sidelined, Dennis Smith Jr. got the nod to start and scored 21 points adding four rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
Jusuf Nurkic and Cody Zeller were the other double-figure contributors with 18 and 10 points respectively. (11).
Boston killed the Blazers from the perimeter shooting a blistering 56.8 percent (21 of 37) while Portland was held to 27.6% on 8 of 29 from deep.
The Celtics also won the glass 47 to 31 and despite having more turnovers (12 for 10 points) they were able to score more (18 points) off the Blazers’ eight turnovers.
Despite winning the fast break (18 to 11) and points in the paint (54 to 50) scoring the Blazers still lost by 28 points.
CJ McCollum (ribs) has been upgraded to probable while Nassir Little (ankle) was upgraded to questionable. Lillard (abdominal) remains out indefinitely and Anfernee Simons (ankle) is also out Monday.
