Wednesday, November 23rd, the LA Clippers, and Golden State Warriors play for the first of four scheduled meetings this season. Golden State will host again on March 2nd while LA will host on February 14th and March 15th.
Both teams last played Monday with the Clippers defeating the Jazz 121-114 while the Warriors finished a back-to-back getting routed 83-128 by the Pelicans.
Last season, the teams played four times with the Warriors taking three of the four contests. The Warriors hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 135 of their 228 matches.
LA Clippers
The Clippers had a rough 2-4 start but flipped things around winning nine of their next 12 which is impressive considering Kawhi Leonard has missed 13 of 18 matches.
Now Paul George is sidelined with a hamstring creating another hurdle to overcome. Since the Clippers added Leonard and George four seasons ago it’s been a struggle to keep them on the court.
Working in the Clippers’ favor is their extremely deep roster which Ty Lue is having to juggle based on the revolving door of injuries.
The Clippers average 106.1 points per game which ranks dead last in the association. LA shoots 47.9 percent from the field ranking eighth and 36.0 percent from the perimeter tied with the Grizzlies in 14th.
Defensively, Clippers’ opponents score 105.8 points per game which is the second-fewest allowed. LA opponents shoot the lowest field goal percentage (44.3%) and they possess the seventh-best opponent perimeter percentage (33.8%).
INJURY UPDATE: After my initial posting the updated injury report downgraded both Paul George (hamstring) and Luke Kennard (calf) to be out Wednesday. Kawhi Leonard (knee) wasn’t on the original report but is now also listed as out which is likely why the spread jumped from six points to nine.
Golden State Warriors
A night after the Warriors put on an impressive offensive display, Steve Kerr elected to rest Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, and Draymond Green.
Thompson who had taken umbrage with comments about his regression responded with 41 points hitting 10 of 13 triples while Thompson, Curry, and Wiggins set an NBA record by a trio – hitting 23 triples (23-38).
Kerr’s choice to rest the core and turn to the youngsters didn’t go well as they got pounded by the Pelicans. The Warriors are trying to instill that compete-level and Warriors winning culture in the youngsters and are experiencing growing pains.
The perfect example of what Golden State wants to do was on display this weekend with the Heat and Raptors both barely having enough players to meet the minimum requirement yet almost stole their games.
And that’s the key point, this isn’t about the youngsters winning or producing huge statistics — rather, it’s about keeping the Dubs in games and being competitive when the core is out.
The Warriors score 115.7 points per game ranking seventh overall. Golden State shoots 47.5% from the field (9th), and 37.6% from the perimeter (8th).
Warriors opponents score 118.0 points per game (28th), shooting 46.0% from the field (10th) and 35.5% from the perimeter (13th).
Andre Iguodala (hip) is out indefinitely.

Being at home should be positive, but how will the Pelicans’ drubbing impact the youngsters’ confidence? It has me contemplating the Draymond – Poole altercation once more.
First, I don’t approve of the punch but it begs the question of what was really going on for things to reach that point. Poole is a notorious trash talker and what I keep wondering is if he and the youngsters took for granted how much work was required to win the title.
Sure, they were part of the championship team but the loss to the Pels sort of punctuates how vital the core four are to their success. And perhaps that was the point behind Kerr resting all four of them. The issue however is how a loss like that impacts their confidence.
Poole in particular has regressed in all his key categories and shooting percentages while Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody’s production is also down.
Kerr has a major task at hand to find the balance between getting this young group to take the next step and doing it in a manner where it’s organic and positive.
Meanwhile, the Clippers have the second-oldest team (average age 28.4 years) which perhaps explains why they are navigating adversity better. But until they can get both Leonard and George on the court simultaneously, I prefer Curry plus his core trio.
That said, the spread feels a tad rich, so I’ll take the Clippers and the points but the Dubs for the win. (Even with the update that both George and Leonard are out I still like the Clippers to keep it closer than the spread).
