On Sunday, May 16th, the Indiana Pacers will face the Toronto Raptors for the third and final meeting between the clubs this season. The clubs split the prior two games with Toronto winning on January 24th, 107-102 and Indy winning on January 25th, 129-116.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Raptors winning three of four contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having won 50 matches of the 94 played.
Indiana Pacers
The opposing coaches are good friends with Nate Bjorkgren spending time on Nick Nurse’s bench as an assistant prior to being hired to replace Nate McMillan.
The Pacers coach hasn’t had an easy time with whispers he may get fired at season end because Malcolm Brogdon and Domantas Sabonis aren’t enamored with his coaching style. It doesn’t help that McMillan has sparkled in taking over for Llyod Pierce in Atlanta.
In fairness, the Pacers have dealt with copious injuries this year as was evidenced by the six core players who missed the match on Saturday in the loss to the Lakers.
Malcolm Brogdon (hamstring), Aaron Holiday (toe sprain), Jeremy Lamb (left knee soreness), Domantas Sabonis (left quad bruise), Edmond Sumner (left knee contusion), and Myles Turner (toe – partial plantar plate tear) all missed the game on Saturday.
TJ Warren (left foot stress fracture) is lost for the season.
Toronto Raptors
Unlike the Pacers, the Raptors won’t be participating in the postseason ending a seven-year run for the franchise. They’ve taken the last few weeks to get a look at the reserves and youngsters on the club.
On Friday Toronto used only seven players and pushed the Mavericks A-team almost pulling off the upset (110-114).
Using their 37th different starting lineup (a franchise record) Raptors rookies Malachi Flynn (26 points) and Jalen Harris got the tap.
They both performed well with Harris recording a career-high 31 points. It marked the 10th different Raptors player to score 30 or more points this season – – an NBA record.
Toronto will finish the season with their core out again including Kyle Lowry (rest), OG Anunoby (calf strain), Pascal Siakam (left shoulder strain), and Fred VanVleet (hip flexor).
Paul Watson (knee tendonitis), Rodney Hood (fractured finger), and Yuta Watanabe (ankle soreness) are also out. Gary Trent Jr. and Chris Boucher didn’t play Friday but aren’t on the injury report so presumably will play Sunday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Raptors are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Indiana Pacers vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
No odds are available yet and it’s likely the uncertainty of knowing who’ll suit up could be why. If the same Pacers crew is out the game will be closer than expected. But if Brogdon and/or Sabonis return it shouldn’t be close.
Indy enters the day in a three-way tie with the Wizards and Hornets (33-38) but is playing for the ninth or 10th seed because they lost both tiebreakers. Since Washington and Charlotte are playing each other one of them will win so Indy can get home court by virtue of winning this game.
