Saturday, May 1st the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder play for the second and final time this week. The Pacers won the April 21st match 113-80 while the Thunder won on January 6th, 122-116.
The Thunder holds the all-time record between the squads with 51 victories in 92 meetings. Last season the teams played twice with the Pacers winning both contests.
Just as some of the injured players may be ready to return, Indiana could be without Malcolm Brogdon who had to leave the last game versus the Nets with tightness in his hamstring.
The Pacers stretch schedule initially appeared to be on the easier side but on closer inspection raises some red flags. Their final 10 games feature only four seeded squads each with reasons to be competitive for seeding purposes.
Those six unseeded teams feature at least three that could dramatically impact seeding for Indiana. Most concerning are the two matches (next Monday and Saturday) versus the Wizards who have pulled within a half-game after their win Friday.
It’s conceivable the Wizards could win both games and Indy would drop potentially even lower than 10th depending on how the Bulls and Raptors perform.
Chicago owns the tiebreak while Toronto is 1-1. Notably, Indy’s final game of the season is versus the Raptors. That match could very well determine the 10th seed if things keep spiraling for the Pacers.
In the loss to the Nets, five Pacers scored in double-figures with Caris LeVert registering 36 points, four rebounds, and five assists versus his former club. Edmond Sumner (16), Doug McDermott (15), Oshae Brissett (14), and Aaron Holiday (12) were the other double-figure contributors.
Brogdon (hamstring tightness), Goga Bitadze (ankle sprain), Jeremy Lamb (knee soreness), and Domantas Sabonis (lower back) are all listed as questionable.
JaKarr Sampson (concussion), Myles Turner (toe), and TJ Warren (foot) are all out
Oklahoma City Thunder
Having halted the losing streak, OKC is back to actively tanking as they lost to the Pelicans. It’s been a good week for the Thunder as Minnesota continues to play spoiler and win with the Thunder now only 1.5 games back of the Wolves.
While any club would love to nab Cade Cunningham or Evan Mobley both would fit perfectly into the positionless system of the revamping Thunder so improving their Draft Lottery odds is the only game note on the chalkboard in OKC.
To that end, while Luguentz Dort remained in the lineup versus New Orleans he’s listed on the injury report as out Saturday and it won’t be surprising if he remains out through season end.
Argentinian Gabriel Deck finally made his debut for OKC and offered up a behind-the-back pass that had Manu Ginobili jumping on social media to celebrate.
Dort led the way with 17 points, Theo Maledon scored 16, Isaiah Roby showcased his offensive versatility (13 points, nine rebounds) scoring in every manner possible and Moses Brown grabbed 18 boards.
Dort (hip), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (foot), and Mike Muscala (ankle) are all out.
