Game 2 of the NBA Finals is on tap Sunday, June 8th, as the Indiana Pacers try to steal another win and the Oklahoma City Thunder look to get back home-court advantage.
Indy held the second-best record in the NBA as of the New Year (OKC was number 1) and found their way to this stage of the playoffs via wins against the Bucks (4-1), Cavaliers (4-1), and Knicks (4-2).
OKC got their berth following victories versus the Grizzlies (4-0), Nuggets (4-3), and Timberwolves (4-1).
Season Series
Last season, the squads played twice, with the Pacers sweeping the series while the Thunder returned the favor this season, sweeping Indy. The Thunder holds the all-time record, having bested the Pacers in 55 of their 101 matches
This is the first time in history these two clubs are meeting in the finals, and both clubs are theoretically (Seattle owned the Thunder when they won a title) seeking their first championship.
Indiana Pacers
Through 40-plus minutes of Game 1, things appeared to be going in favor of the OKC Thunder. Then, inexplicably, the Pacers pulled off another clutch-time comeback victory.
Literally, everything had to go precisely right for Indy, including a controversial lane violation call, for Indy to take a one-point lead (their first of the entire match) and the Game 1 victory.
Tyrese Haliburton was tentative and looked shaken for most of the match, but delivered on the one shot that mattered while the Pacers’ others stepped up down the stretch to make the comeback possible.

For the majority of Game 1, the Thunder had control of the match and seemed poised to take the victory, but a series of unlucky bounces and questionable strategic moves thwarted that from happening.
Changes were part of the match as Mark Daigneault elected to change his starting lineup, inserting Cason Wallace in place of Isaiah Hartenstein.
Although the decision was driven by matchups, the Thunder lost the rebounding battle and also failed to convert the turnovers they created as frequently as they typically do. The question is whether Daigneault flinched too early and, in doing so, lost his advantage (size on the boards).
SGA produced, although Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren were less effective, shooting a combined 8 of 28.

OKC ranked third offensively (119.2) and first defensively (106.6) with a net differential of plus +12.7, which also ranked first overall this regular season.
Notably, the Thunder’s record against the spread is 62-37-1 through 100 contests.

The first number to focus on heading into Game 2 is how the Thunder have responded to losses this postseason.
After their first playoff loss, they thumped the Nuggets by 43 points, and in their four prior cumulative losses to Game 1, their point differential was an average of plus +20.5 points.
The big question is whether Daigneault will reevaluate his initial knee-jerk roster reaction and return to a double-big starting lineup. Certainly, they could use some more bodies to rebound, and OKC needs to recognize that when they play small ball, the Pacers can match WITH BIGGER BODIES.
To that end, Siakam was crucial to the victory, and my guess is Jalen Williams will be more invested defensively as the Thunder look to adjust and take Pascal out of his rhythm.
As I noted in the Game 1 preview, I anticipated OKC would blow out the Pacers in Game 2, and I’m sticking with that prediction, so take the Thunder to cover.
