On Monday, January 4, 2021, the Indiana Pacers will travel to play the New Orleans Pelicans in the first meeting between the clubs this season. Both teams enter the match sporting identical 4-2 records.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Pelicans winning both games. Indiana holds the all-time record between the squads with 24 victories in the team’s 49 meetings.
Indiana Pacers
New head coach Nate Bjorkgren has his squad playing great on both sides of the court with an optimistic and upbeat style of play on offense and has brought similar schemes that the Raptors utilized on defense to Indiana.
In a rarity, the Pacers lost to a team they technically should have beat with the 106-102 loss to the Knicks on Saturday. Making it worse was Indiana held the lead in clutch time but were unable to score for over four minutes allowing the Knicks to go on an 11-0 run and it cost them the match.
Malcolm Brogdon led the scoring with a career-high 33 points including seven 3-pointers. Domantas Sabonis delivered his sixth consecutive double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Myles Turner (17), Victor Oladipo (16), and Justin Holiday (12) were the other double-figure contributors.
TJ Warren will have surgery to repair a small navicular stress fracture in his left foot. Timelines for when he’ll have the surgery and how long he’ll be out aren’t known.
Goga Bitadze (ankle) and Brian Bowen (groin) are both out indefinitely while Jeremy Lamb is slated to return in mid to late January from the torn ACL he suffered last year.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans held on to beat the Toronto Raptors who erased a 12 point deficit to take the lead late in their match.
New Orleans scored on just five plays in the final frame but were augmented by 27 trips to the free-throw line and 47 overall which was enough to net the victory.
Brandon Ingram led the way with 31 points while starters Eric Bledsoe and Steven Adams delivered double-doubles. Bledsoe offered 19 points and 10 assists while Adams produced 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Zion Williamson scored 21 and Lonzo Ball chipped in 13 points as the other double-figure contributors.
Sindarius Thornwell missed the last game to the league’s health and safety protocols. He will not be cleared to face the Pacers on Monday. Wenyen Gabriel (knee) and Will Magnay (personal) are both out indefinitely.

Free Indiana Pacers vs. New Orleans Pelicans NBA Prediction:
While the Pelicans have two victories over the Raptors and are playing better defensively they aren’t going to typically get 20 more free throws than their opponent or 47 every match.
Similarly, the Pacers aren’t going to struggle to score for long stretches in clutch time with the exciting offense Bjorkgren has brought to Indiana.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Bet the under
Both reserve units have struggled at times but the key matchup in this contest is Domantas Sabonis who’ll likely be defended by Steven Adams but if he can switch onto Zion it’ll be barbecue chicken all night.
Frankly, I’m shocked the Pacers aren’t the favorite unless the oddsmakers believe Stan’s crew will regularly get 47 free throws.
