On Wednesday, December 7th the Indiana Pacers and Minnesota Timberwolves for the second and final time this season. Minny won the initial meeting 115-101 on November 23rd.
Despite playing a back-to-back without their star, Indy defeated the Warriors 112-104 while the Wolves have been off since Saturday following a 128-135 loss to the Thunder.
Last season, the teams played twice with Minny winning both contests ending a five-game losing streak against the Pacers. The Pacers hold the all-time record having bested the Wolves in 41 of their 65 matches
Indiana Pacers
For the first time since the season began the Pacers hit adversity. Tyrese Haliburton was injured and they were just 1-4 on the road trip. It had many (raises hand) wondering if they had reached the stage where they would shift into tanking gear.
Instead, they marched into Chase Center and beat the defending champions as if to say – hold your horses. While Benn Mathurin has us wondering if Paolo Banchero should be the automatic Rookie of the Year – it was the other rookie Andrew Nembhard who stepped up.
In fact, Nembhard has been integral to both wins on this trip, nailing the game-winning 3-pointer in LA and then channeling Steph Curry on his own court by registering a double-double of 31 points and 13 assists with eight rebounds.
The Canadian hit 5 of 7 deep balls including a step-back version right in Steph’s face that had even Curry shaking his head in disbelief.
The Pacers average 115.0 points per game (8th) shooting 45.0% from the field (27th) and 35.7% from deep (15th). Defensively, Indy allows 115.9 points (24th) with opponents shooting 46.7% from the field (13th), and 36.8% from deep (23rd).
Tyrese Haliburton (groin), Myles Turner (hamstring), T.J. McConnell (illness), and James Johnson (elbow) are questionable. Daniel Theis (knee) and Chris Duarte (ankle) are out.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Over the years I’ve witnessed Rudy Gobert deliver elbows in the paint and take some questionable dirty shots. Granted, he’s been on the receiving end of many of those shots but it doesn’t make it right.
Tripping Kenrich Williams got him tossed from the game and wasn’t just a dirty play it was a dumb play. The Wolves are already without Karl-Anthony Towns so as the vet on the squad Gobert needs to step up and lead this team not put them in a bigger hole.
It highlighted the issues on this Wolves team — the three main stars are each more individually motivated than team-oriented and unless they get on the same page success will remain out of their grasp.
Minnesota hasn’t hit their stride defensively which is reflected in the stats with opponents scoring 116.1 (26th) while shooting 45.7% (7) and 37.4% from deep (26th).
Offensively, the Wolves score 115.0 points per game (9th), while shooting 48.3% from the field (6th) and 32.6% from the perimeter (28th).
Taurean Prince (shoulder) is out until mid-December while Towns (calf) will be out until mid-January.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Wolves are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Pacers are 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games.
- The Wolves are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games at home.
- Indiana is 2-4 SU in their last 6 games.
Free Indiana Pacers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
Preseason the team in this matchup everyone expected to be winning was the Wolves. Instead, it’s the young Pacers who have become the Cinderella story of this campaign.
They are on opposite ends of the spectrum with the Pacers gleeful and happy for everyone’s success while the Wolves are in an obvious power struggle and lacking any chemistry on or off the court.
Considering injuries, rest advantage, and depth this should be a win for the Wolves but I’m taking the Pacers…
I suspect the Wolves will lead early — get mouthy about that fact and forget the Pacers are arguably the best second-half team in the league so Indy will use the punking to motivate another come-from-behind victory.
