The Pacers are somewhat odd -3.5 favorites when they head to Denver to face the Nuggets on Wednesday. Sure Denver is dealing through the Jamal Murray knee injury and recently had Michael Porter, Jr. head to the sidelines, but they’re also coming off a dominating 113-96 win over the Heat last time out.
Of course the major reason that Denver is a home underdog is because they’re without MVP Nikola Jokic who is serving a one game suspension for his role in an altercation with Miami on Monday night. That’s a huge break for Indiana.
Indiana Pacers
Indiana not having to match up with Jokic gives them a huge edge on the blocks in this matchup. JaMychal Green steps into the starting spot but even Jokic might have had a hard time producing as the Pacers are the 3rd best team vs. the C over the last five games.
While Denver is a bit shorthanded for this matchup, Indiana hopes to get Malcolm Brogdon back from a non-COVID illness. That would put the Pacers close to full strength as they’ve also been working Caris LeVert back into the lineup over the last five games, and he’s played 30+ minutes in the last three.
Overall Indiana has won three of their last four after a disappointing 1-6 start to the season. A lot of that poor start was due to battling through injuries, so a healthy Pacers team looks like a dangerous one.
Denver Nuggets
It’s the understatement of the year to say that Denver will be missing Jokic on Wednesday night. 25.4 ppg and 13.6 rebounds/game are kind of nice to have, but so is an inside presence to battle the likes of Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner.
It’s hard to know who Denver turns to with Jokic out. This would’ve been a great opportunity for Porter, Jr. to step into a leadership role (even if for just one game) but he’s out with what looks like a back injury.
Will Barton is the team’s second leading scorer putting up 16.2 ppg, and Aaron Gordon has upside even though he’s averaging just 12.0 ppg. Barton had 25 to help lead the win over the Heat so he’ll be expected to pick up a bulk of the workload in Wednesday’s contest.

Free Indiana Pacers vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction:
It’s just hard to see how Denver stays in this contest without Jokic. Porter, Jr. has been struggling this season but at least he’s another scoring option that at the very minimum has upside. You’re asking a lot of Barton to be option 1A in the offense especially against Brogdon’s defense.
Indiana is just the better team here. Sabonis, LeVert, Brogdon, or even Turner could lead this team in scoring on Wednesday night and Denver simply doesn’t have the answers without Jokic.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Pacers -3.5
A large portion of the betting public is going to be fading Denver in this spot so it is kind of a red flag game.
