Wednesday, November 9th the Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors meet for the first of two scheduled meetings. The Rockets will host the second game on February 3rd.
Both teams last played Monday with the Rockets defeating the Magic in a 134-127 offensive showcase while the Raptors completed a back-to-back, home-and-home set losing 97-111 in the second game to split the set.
Last season the clubs played twice with the Raptors sweeping the regular-season series. The Rockets hold the all-time record with 29 wins in 52 matches versus the Raptors.
Houston Rockets
With two ‘Tanker Bowls’ on Monday (Pistons, Thunder) the Rockets and Magic played in the one featuring absolutely ZERO defense. That was evidenced by the efficiencies of how both clubs shot the ball.
The Magic shot 54.9% from the field and 48% from deep but were bested by the Rockets who shot 52.9% from the field and a whopping 50% from deep.
It wasn’t a game to catch if you aren’t a fan of the perimeter as the teams combined to shoot 73 triples although Houston was far more aggressive shooting 48 of them and per that 50% connected on 24.
The other tell-tale sign of limited to no defense was the 42 combined turnovers (22 by the Rockets) leading to 31 points each (the Raptors will be salivating at that prospect as they lead the NBA in points scored off turnovers and conversely give up the fewest).
Jalen Green led the way with 34 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Double-doubles were served up by while Alperen Sengun (20 points,10 rebounds), and Kevin Porter Jr. (17 points, 11 assists).
The Rockets allow 117.9 points per game ranking 27th while opponents are shooting a whopping 50.4 percent from the field which is the second-worst mark and are 20th in perimeter defense allowing 36.9 percent from deep.
Houston averages 110.4 points per match ranking 21st while shooting 43.3% from the field and 36.2% from the perimeter which is the 29th and 13th ranked marks.
Jae’Sean Tate (ankle) was downgraded to out. Bruno Fernando (knee) is out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
Let me put the Raptors’ tough opening schedule in perspective. Toronto along with the Bucks, Cavaliers, Celtics, and Hawks are the five East teams with winning records.
All but Atlanta (1) has played two back-to-back sets while the Celts and Cavs have yet to play a baseball set – (two consecutive games against the same team) as have eight other NBA teams.
A total of 14 baseball sets have been played, seven in each conference with six teams playing two sets while Toronto is the only club to play three sets (which they did over a nine-game stretch).
Typically teams will split these sets although the opponent matters as proven by four of the six sets that were swept featured tanking (or lower tier) teams like the Bucks and Hawks who played the Pistons.
In contrast, the Raps faced the Heat in Miami, 76ers in Toronto, and a home-and-home, back-to-back set version versus the Bulls. All three sets were split 1-1.
Ultimately, the schedule will balance out and though Toronto will play four more sets they’re spaced out and feature mostly lower-tier clubs (Magic, Hornets x2, Wizards) or clubs likely to be tanking when they face them.
Toronto averages 111.9 points per game which ranks 16th. From an efficiency perspective, the Raps shoot 45.5% from the field (22nd) and 36.4% from the perimeter (6th).
Defensively, Toronto allows the fourth-fewest (106.5) points per game. They are in a four-way tie (Mavericks, Warriors, Celtics) at holding opponents to 47 percent from the field and rank 17th on opponent 3-point efficiency (35.8%)
Khem Birch (knee) was downgraded to out as is Justin Champagnie (back) on Wednesday. Pascal Siakam (groin) will miss at least two weeks.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Rockets are 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Raptors are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 12 of Houston’s last 18 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 9 of Toronto’s last 13 games against Houston.
Free Houston Rockets vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
The opponent list for the East teams with winning records offers another variance with every team but Toronto playing a team(s) with only two of three wins – – Hawks (5), Cavs/Bucks (3), and Celtics (1 – schedule difficulty closest to Raptors).
The Nets and Heat had the lowest records of teams Toronto played (both 4-7) and if we’re fair probably the teams expected to rebound from that poor start.
Their next four games feature the Rockets, Thunder, Pacers and Pistons a group that will provide more insight on this club albeit playing without Siakam and Barnes continuing to nurse a wonky ankle.
Still, they’ll welcome this stretch and I suspect take advantage by starting with a win Wednesday. The nine points is a bit rich but the turnovers and shooting percentages the Rockets offer should be offset those concerns.
