Wednesday, February 17th the Houston Rockets will meet the Philadelphia 76ers for the first time this season. Both teams played and lost on Monday.
Last season, the squads played twice each team taking one match. The Rockets hold the slim edge in all-time victories with 74 wins in the team’s 145 meetings.
While the 76ers are on a three-game losing streak the Rockets are mired in a season-high six-game losing streak.
Houston limped into the game in Washington and wasn’t able to deliver John Wall with a victory versus the team he’d spent all his career with prior to this season.
Wall did his best to carry the Rockets posting his best stats in scoring and dimes via a double-double of 29 points and 11 assists.
The Rockets were missing starters Eric Gordon, Victor Oladipo, Christian Wood, and PJ Tucker. The latter was significant as it marked the first time Tucker hadn’t played in 267 games which were the most in the NBA.
Despite all the players who were out injured those who replaced them in the starting rotation each reached double-figure scores. Specifically, David Nwaba (19), Jae’Sean Tate (18), Danuel House (17), and DeMarcus Cousins (12) hitting that benchmark.
Houston got more bad news in the match as Ray Spalding suffered an injury to his Achilles that coach Stephen Silas believes did not look good (read: he probably ruptured his Achilles tendon).
Moving forward, Gordon (groin), Oladipo (foot), Tucker (quadriceps), and Spalding (Achilles) are all listed as game-time decisions although the Spalding situation seems unlikely to produce good results.
Wood (ankle) won’t be back until February 19th at the earliest and Dante Exum (calf) is out at least until March.
While the 76ers fought the top team in the NBA they did so without the services of Joel Embiid who is dealing with back spasms.
Mike Scott returned for the match versus the Suns and started against the Jazz on Monday. Scott had missed 13 games in a row with a knee injury.
Without Embiid, the 76ers other stars did their best to win in Utah with three collecting double-doubles. Ben Simmons scored a career-high 42 points and was just one rebound shy of a triple-double with 12 assists, nine rebounds, a steal, and a block.
Tobias Harris collected 36 points and 10 rebounds and Dwight Howard produced 14 points and 12 rebounds as the other players to register double-double efforts.
Seth Curry (11) was the other player to reach double-figures.
The 76ers perimeter shooting continued to be problematic as they shot 8 of 23 from deep for 34.8 percent efficiency.
Philly outrebounded the Jazz 42 to 36. The loss extends the streak to three in a row for the 76ers.
Shake Milton missed his second consecutive game with an ankle injury. Embiid and Milton are both questionable for Wednesday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Rockets are 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The 76ers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Houston Rockets vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Injuries will be the deciding factor particularly for the Rockets who are missing numerous core contributors. The Rockets frontcourt in particular is devasted with Wood and Tucker. Cousins can only log so many minutes so assuming Embiid is good to go that will cause copious defensive issues for Stephen Silas.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: 76ers ATS
With both clubs seeking to end a losing streak, they’ll be focused and motivated, but like most teams, Houston has no one who can stop Embiid so assuming his back doesn’t keep him from participating this should be an easy 76ers victory.
