Monday, January 3rd, finds the Houston Rockets facing the Philadelphia 76ers for the first time this season and will finish their season series in Houston on January 24th.
The 76ers last played on Thursday defeating the nets 110-102 while the Rockets played Saturday losing 111-124 to the Nuggets.
Last season, the squads played twice with the 76ers taking both contests. The Rockets hold the advantage all-time having won 74 times of the club’s 147 meetings.
Houston Rockets
With the New Year arriving the window for NBA trades is in motion and teams like the Rockets who aren’t expected to be playoff contenders have decisions to make. Certainly, they would love to get a call about John Wall but few clubs would be willing to eat his albatross contract.
It’s hard to imagine any contending team views him as the answer to their problems although check back to see if the Lakers get desperate enough to try to swap Westbrook for Wall.
There are more logical names the Rockets front office will be discussing including veteran Eric Gordon who can fill both 3-point shooting and playmaking needs for a contender.
The bigger question centered on Christian Wood and whether he is an essential piece of the core or the Rockets’ best trade chip. The latter became more likely after Saturday’s altercation.
Kevin Porter exited the arena before half time and Wood refused to check into the game after the break following a heated half time discussion about the team’s effort (or lack thereof).
Porter is known as a malcontent — it was why Houston got him at a bargain in the first place. Wood is also developing a reputation for being difficult. Earlier this season he wasn’t happy about touches and refused to shoot for an entire half in the next game to prove his point.
Bottom line- character matters and neither player are helping themselves by acting out this way and unfortunately it’s coach Stephen Silas who is caught between a rock and a hard place.
Should Houston elect to shop Porter and Wood they need to keep their trade value high – showcase their talents and limit conflict (and leaks about drama). Conversely, not disciplining them could diminish how Silas is viewed by the remainder of the Rockets.
DJ Augustin and Garrison Matthews were upgraded to probable but Armoni Brooks remains in quarantine. Gordon (groin) and Alperen Sengun (ankle) are both questionable to play the 76ers. Wall (personal) remains out.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers had a light schedule last week playing two Atlantic division teams the severely undermanned Raptors and the Nets who just got back Kevin Durant. They won both matches but ironically had an easier time with Brooklyn.
Joel Embiid led the way as per usual and offered a fun dramatic bit as he and Kevin Durant got into it chirping at each other. Embiid offered 34 points, seven rebounds, an assist, three steals, and one block.
Andre Drummond produced a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds in a reserve role while Tyrese Maxey scored 25 and Seth Curry chipped in 17 points.
Danny Green and Tyler Johnson are both in protocols and questionable for Monday. Aaron Henry (illness) is questionable to play versus Houston while Ben Simmons remains out under suspension.

Free Houston Rockets vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Houston ranks 26th on offense (106.3), 29th on defense (114.0), and has a minus -7.7 net differential which places 28th. In contrast, Philly possesses the 12th ranked offense (109.9), 20th defense (109.5), and are a plus +0.4 net differential which ranks 13th.
No word on whether Porter and Wood will be disciplined and if that will include missing games. Philly will win regardless it’s more about how the rest of the Rockets respond to being called out for playing without energy.
