Wednesday, November 17th, finds the Houston Rockets playing the Oklahoma City Thunder squad for the second time this season. In the initial meeting, the Rockets won 124-91 which remains their only victory this season.
Both teams played on Monday with the Rockets losing to the Grizzlies while the Thunder lost to the Heat.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Thunder winning two of the three contests. The Thunder holds the all-time record having bested the Rockets in 116 of their 227 matches.
Houston Rockets
Five Rockets scored in double-figures in the loss to the Grizzlies but none scored more than 15 points. And while the offense could’ve used an injection of energy it was their defense that was severely missing as they allowed Memphis to score 136 points.
Rookie Jalen Green had a team-high score of 15 points. Jae’Sean Tate registered 14 points and nine rebounds including five on the offensive glass. Christian Wood (11), Daniel Theis (10), and David Nwaba (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
Wood took just nine shots from the field an oddity given he is inarguably the best player on the team, yet three of the other starters took more shots than him.
Mind you things took a big swing in that regard after Wood made comments after a one-point loss about not being involved more in the offense or getting enough touches.
In the nine games prior to that point, he was averaging a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds on 15.2 field goal attempts per game. Since that infamous postgame speech, his stats are almost cut in half (11 points, 7.2 rebounds) with 11 field goal attempts per game.
The question is why his production has taken such a large dip on just a few less touches per game. It might be a coincidence but it seems more likely to be an internal issue of conflict which isn’t ideal for coach Stephen Silas to also have to navigate.
Eric Gordon (groin) missed the game Monday and is questionable for Wednesday while John Wall remains out on a mutual decision between him and the team.
Oklahoma City Thunder
For a team that is tanking the four-game winning streak wasn’t in the plans but it was very indicative of the heart and competitiveness of the squad.
They may have surprised the Lakers but other elite teams are aware they fight to the final buzzer and subsequently the Nets and Heat both made sure to play the full 48 minutes and take care of business.
In the loss to Miami, the Thunder took an early lead but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a rough shooting night of 2 of 11 for a mere 10 points his lowest total this season. Coincidentally, the next lowest occurred versus the Rockets (13 points).
Luguentz Dort is continuing to showcase his development as a two-way player scoring 20 points on 8 of 16 from the field and 4 of 8 from deep. Dort has scored in double-digits in 10 of his 12 appearances this season and 20 or more in each of the last four games.
The Thunder rookies had strong efforts with Jeremiah Robinson-Earl scoring 16 points and hitting four of his six 3-pointers while Josh Giddey filled the stat sheet with six points, nine rebounds, nine assists, a steal, and two blocks.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Thunder are 5-5 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
