Saturday, December 11th finds the Houston Rockets facing the Memphis Grizzlies in their second meeting of the season. In the initial meeting between the clubs on November 15th, the Grizzlies routed the Rockets 136-102
Houston is playing Friday in the first game of a back-to-back set hosting the Bucks. They’ll either arrive Saturday sporting an eight-game win streak or be looking to start a new one.
The Grizzlies played in their own back-to-back set on Wednesday and Thursday losing to the Mavericks 96-104 then bouncing back for a quality win despite being shorthanded versus the Lakers 108-95.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Grizzlies taking two of the three contests. The Rockets hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 63 of their 103 matches

That the Rockets are winning isn’t all that surprising. We can make jokes about how they were purposely losing when they were on the 15 game losing streak to get a jump start on the tank.
Yet, it seems more logical the wins have much more to do with putting experienced players on the court.
The evidence to offer relevance to that thought is rookie Jalen Green has been out for the entirety of the win streak and Kevin Porter Jr. out the last three games.
Christian Wood and Eric Gordon are having a blast finally able to play in competitive matches to either stoke their desires to remain in Houston or offer fodder to trade partners should Houston elect to return to a tanking position.
John Wall remains on the sidelines awaiting the front office to either find a trade partner for him, give in to his desires to play (and start) or offer him a buy-out for his egregiously large contract.
Danuel House (ankle), and Porter (thigh) are questionable for Saturday while Jalen Green (leg) is out indefinitely.
Memphis Grizzlies
If the Grizzlies end up with a home-court seed and better yet continue their defensive turnaround once Ja Morant returns then Tayler Jenkins should be given full consideration as Coach of the Year.
What he’s accomplished via this complete reversal on defense and motivating Jaren Jackson to take a step is on par with what Nate McMillan did last season in Atlanta when he took over.
The Grizzlies’ recent win versus the Lakers was made all the more impressive given they were playing the second game of a back-to-back set. Plus they were severely shorthanded with Dillon Brooks joining Ja Morant as starters who were out.
In the victory versus the Lakers, Jaren Jackson Jr. led the way with 25 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Desmond Bane continued his star ascent with 23 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.
Tyus Jones chipped in 13 points while Steven Adams grabbed 13 boards.
Memphis will be playing with a shortened roster as several core players are out. Specifically, Brooks (COVID), Brandon Clarke (knee), and Morant (knee/health and safety) are definitely sidelined. Sam Merrill (ankle) and Zaire Williams (ankle) are questionable).

Although Jackson and Bane have offered enough firepower and defense losing Brooks and Clarke makes it hard to pick the Grizzlies to cover big spreads.
As other teams have learned winning games without one star is hard let alone losing three of your core six and I wonder if that will eventually catch up to Memphis.
Even with the Rockets playing Friday, I’m taking them to keep the game closer than 8.5 points.
