Saturday, December 18th the Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors meet for the second and final time this season. The initial meeting on November 21st was won by the Warriors 119-104.
This is the final match of the Warriors’ five-game road trip and the second game of a back-to-back set having defeated the Celtics 111-107 on Friday.
Toronto began the week on a back-to-back beating the Kings 124-101 then losing in overtime 129-131 to the Nets. They were scheduled to play in Chicago Thursday but the match was postponed due to so many Bulls being put in quarantine.
Last season, the squads played twice with each club winning on their home court. The Warriors hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors in 30 of their 49 matches.
Golden State Warriors
When the Celtics fan base is cheering for an opponent it confirmed you’ve crossed into rare territory. That was the case for Steph Curry as the TD Garden fans serenaded him during introductions and again with his initial 3-point make.
He finished with 30 points and remained a bit off from outside (5 of 14) plus added five rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
Andrew Wiggins is becoming an important part of the Warriors rotation and it will be extremely interesting to see how things shift once Klay Thompson returns. Theorthetically the Dubs should become much more dangerous on both ends if Klay is close to his former self.
Wiggins scored 27 points adding six rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. The only other double-figure scorer was Andre Iguodala with 12. Draymond Green led the defensive stand plus chipped in six points, five rebounds, eight assists, and a block.
Jordon Poole (COVID) is out indefinitely. UPDATE: Kerr hinted post game the Warriors are likely to sit Curry (rest), Green (hip soreness), Iggy (knee- injury management), and Otto Porter Jr. (foot – injury management). As such the odds and spread changed to favor the Raptors.
Toronto Raptors
Scottie Barne is a treat, each time he plays it’s like unwrapping a gift discovering something new. Although the Raptors lost in overtime to the Nets, Barnes was pulling up hitting 3-pointers and backing down Kevin Durant scoring on him as if he was a 10-year vet.
The rookie collected his second double-double in three outings with 23 points and 12 rebounds (5 OR) plus five assists. Fred VanVleet led the way with 31 points, nine assists, four rebounds, two steals.
Four Raptors scored 20 or more points including Pascal Siakam (25 points, six rebounds), and Gary Trent Jr. (25 points, five assists, three steals).
Dalano Banton (illness) was upgraded to probable while Khem Birch (knee) was downgraded to doubtful. Given the extra clarification of those two the fact OG Anunoby (hip), Precious Achuiwas (quarantine) and David Johnson (calf) are all questionable likely means they’re out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 5-4-1 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Both Steph Curry and Andrew Wiggins get up to play in Toronto. Curry spent time as a youngster in the city when father Dell was playing for the Raptors while Wiggins grew up just north of the city.
Kerr suggested resting Curry in one of the four games this week initially tapping Indy but backed off given his chase for the record. This would be a logical game to rest him (see update above).
Per the injury update above with several players out the odds shifted to favor the Raptors and while I think Toronto will win, and Nick Nurse only needs to limit Wiggins I still think this game will be closer than 7.5 points but Toronto should net the victory.
