On Tuesday, February 9th the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs play their second game in as many nights with the Spurs taking the initial game 105-100.
The clubs met once earlier in the season on January 20th in a match the Warriors won 99-121.
The Spurs hold the all-time record between the clubs with 111 wins in 173 meetings. Last season, the teams played only two times because of the pandemic with the Spurs winning both contests.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors jumped on the Spurs on Monday night taking a nine-point lead into the second quarter that was down to five by the half and whittled to two entering the final frame.
The game after Stephen Curry blew up in Dallas scoring 57 points and hitting 11 deep balls he delivered another stellar performance but tried to be more of a facilitator. He led the Dubs with 32 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and a steal.
He was highly efficient shooting 10 of 17 from the field, 6 of 11 from the perimeter, and 6 of 6 from the line.
After getting out to a slow start this season Kelly Oubre Jr. seems to have found his groove. In the initial 16 games, Oubre was shooting 35.1 percent from the field and 20.2 percent from deep.
However, in the last seven games, he’s improved to 49.5 percent from the field and 45.4 percent from the perimeter. On Monday, he was the beta to Steph’s alpha scoring 24 points including 4 of 8 deep balls.
The other starters chipped in with Draymond Green registering a double-double (10 rebounds, 10 assists, and seven points), Andrew Wiggins scored 11 points on a cold shooting night and Juan Toscano-Anderson grabbed 11 rebounds.
Golden State was without much depth in the frontcourt again as rookie James Wiseman (wrist) missed his fourth consecutive game, Kevon Looney (ankle) remained out and Marquesse Chriss is lost for the season.
Without their big men, it’s affecting the Warriors’ reserve depth who were outscored 32-18 by the Spurs bench.
San Antonio Spurs
It may sound like a broken record but Gregg Popovich seems to have reinvented the Spurs again.
Like many teams, they’ve dealt with their fair share of injuries missing Derrick White for 18 of the team’s first 19 games. Now, they’re without LaMarcus Aldridge (hip) and aren’t expected to get him back anytime soon.
With the Spurs culture firmly established though there is always someone ready to step up aided by arguably the most versatile group of young wings and guards in the league.
Case in point, in Monday’s victory, Dejounte Murray came close to registering an unusual triple-double with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and EIGHT steals.
DeMar DeRozan (21 points and 10 assists) and Jakob Poeltl (14 points, 11 rebounds) both produced double-doubles. Rudy Gay (11) and Devin Vassell (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Lonnie Walker IV (illness) missed Monday’s match and is questionable for Tuesday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Spurs are 6-4 in the clubs last 10 meetings.
- Spurs are 6-4 ATS in the squads last 10 meetings
- The teams are 4-6 in the over/under in their last 10 meetings.
Free Golden State Warriors vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Prediction: Spurs slow it down.
For those not buying he Spurs hype – they’ve registered quality wins against elite teams including the Clippers, Lakers, Nuggets, and Celtics.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Warriors +1.5
Many of the consecutive venue matches this season are resulting in splits. The Spurs have played four of those sets and are yet to win both games. Conversely, the Warriors who also have played four sets have split three and won both games versus the Wolves.
Although small ball might be taking a toll on the Dubs, Curry is on a roll so I’m leaning to them eeking out a close victory.
