In the marquee event of Christmas Day, the scheduling Gods shined upon the fans as the top two teams in the association face off with the Phoenix Suns hosting the Golden State Warriors.
Each team has won once against the other and this is primed to be an extremely competitive game. Phoenix won on November 30th (104-96) while the Warriors took the December 3rd meeting (118-96).
Both teams last played on Thursday with the Warriors beating the Grizzlies 113-104 while the Suns won 113-101 versus the Thunder.
Golden State Warriors
The timing of losing Jordan Poole, Andrew Wiggins, and Damion Lee to protocols isn’t ideal given this contest would be best served if both teams had a fully healthy roster.
I half expected to see the Warriors bubble wrap Stephen Curry after the game Thursday just to ensure the league gets him safely to the big event.
In spite of missing several core contributors, Golden State found a way to win Thursday and Curry delivered his most efficient game since the middle of November hitting eight of his 14 perimeter shots scoring 46 points on 13 of 22 from the field.
Gary Payton II added 22 points in a starting role while Draymond Green delivered his typical full box statistics of five rebounds, nine assists, two steals, and three blocks including two on 3-point shots.
The Warriors will need to be mindful of not turning over the ball as they had 23 miscues in the first meeting and 17 in the second both leading to 19 Phoenix points.
Of the trio in quarantine, barring the discussed reduction to six days of quarantine (from 10) only Jordan Poole would potentially be eligible to participate. In addition, Andre Iguodala (knee) is questionable. Klay Thompson (Achilles) and James Wiseman (knee) remain out.
Phoenix Suns
Although the Suns continued to win (5-2) while Devin Booker was out with the hamstring injury his return bolstered the Suns’ offense.
Phoenix has won all three games since his return with the All-Star averaging 23.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1.3 steals while shooting 53.8 percent on 8.7 perimeter attempts.
In the most recent victory versus the Thunder, Booker led his team in scoring with 30 points while Deandre Ayton offered a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Cameron Johnson (21) and Chris Paul (16) were the other double-figure contributors.
Abdel Nader (knee) is questionable for Saturday while Frank Kaminsky (knee), and Dario Saric (knee) are all out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Golden State’s last 15 games.
- The Suns are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Warriors are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Phoenix’s last 5 games.
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
These teams are among the six who rank in the top 10 in the big three categories (Jazz, Bulls, Heat, Bucks). Phoenix ranks eighth offensively (110.4), second defensively (102.8), and third (+7.6) in net differential.
Golden State is the only team that ranks in the top five for all three categories — fourth in offense (112.0) then first both defensively (101.4) and in net differential (+10.5).
Phoenix has the decided advantage based on having more of their core healthy while the Warriors are sufficiently prepared to rise to the challenge having spent the last road trip under pressure as Curry chased and ultimately made history.
The question is will Booker steal the spotlight from Steph and the Warriors?
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Warriors +6
If either Wiggins or Poole was able to play I’d lean to the Warriors winning but without either, I’m banking on the Suns winning by a narrow margin.
