The teams at the top and bottom of the Western Conference will face each other in a home and home series to start and finish this week.
The first meeting occurs on Tuesday with the Golden State Warriors traveling to play the. Oklahoma City Thunder and on Saturday they’ll reverse roles with the Dubs playing host.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Warriors taking all three contests. The Thunder holds the all-time record having bested the Warriors in 141 of their 256 matches.
Golden State Warriors
Every analyst who was uncertain how good the Warriors would be got an immediate response when they opened the season going unbeaten against the Lakers, Clippers, and Kings.
It’s true the LA teams are dealing with roster turnover and chemistry adjustments but these wins were no less impressive. Similarly, the Kings have started strong defeating the Blazers and pushing the Jazz.
Stephen Curry was easily the MVP of week one averaging 31 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2.3 steals. He’s 25 for 61 from deep (41%) and reached 5,000 career assists on Sunday.
However, what opponents should be concerned about is this Dubs team is playing with the same freedom they displayed during their five years of supremacy. They are averaging 27.7 assists per game with ball/player movement a priority and the defense is reminiscent of the title years.
And this is happening without Klay Thompson, James Wiseman, or Jonathan Kuminga. While the latter two are youngsters they will add length and versatility to the Dubs rotations.
Oklahoma City Thunder
On the opposite end of the Western Conference spectrum is the OKC Thunder who have lost all three of their games and are one of only two teams who remain winless (Pistons). This is precisely the start Sam Presti desired given all the draft capital he possesses.
OKC simply can’t afford to overachieve again and have a repeat of last season when winning one extra game on the final night versus the Clippers likely cost them a top-four draft pick. Not that anyone is complaining given how well Josh Giddey is performing.
Through three games Giddey is averaging 9.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and looks more like a seasoned vet than a rookie. although he just turned 19 on October 10th.
In spite of the losses and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s struggles to start the season, there are glimpses of what this team will become as Presti adds talented prospects and eventually packages some of those draft picks to add further depth around the core.
Watching the games it’s clear development is taking precedent over winning. For example, Mike Muscala and Kenrich Williams are two of the more productive, skilled players on Mark Daigneault’s roster but they’re logging limited minutes and often don’t enter until the opponent has built a lead.
Either would be great additions to contending clubs looking to add depth and I can’t help but wonder if that’s why they are playing as much as they are. No doubt Presti is sitting in his office talking to his peers about their skills and inquiring about draft picks to add to his horde.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Warriors are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Warriors are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 3-7 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
