Thursday, January 6th finds the Golden State Warriors and New Orleans Pelicans tipping off in their second meeting of the season. Golden State won the initial contest 126-85 on November 5th. The clubs will play once more in New Orleans on April 10th.
Golden State is playing a back-to-back set having lost to the Mavericks on Wednesday (82-99). New Orleans last played Tuesday in a losing 110-123 effort versus the Suns.
The Warriors hold the all-time record between the clubs with 42 wins in 65 meetings versus the Pelicans. Last season, the teams played three times with the Warriors taking two of the three contests.
Golden State Warriors
Anticipation for Klay Thompson’s return is growing with reports suggesting it should occur on Sunday when the Warriors return home to play the Cavaliers.
Prior to that event, the Dubs have this back-to-back set versus the Mavericks and Pelicans but getting back Thompson and with James Wiseman progressing toward a return this team is the clear title favorite.
Making that case even stronger was how the Warriors beat the top offensive team (Jazz) without their best defender in the lineup (Draymond Green) and have been able to win games even when Stephen Curry isn’t hitting with his typical precision.
Kerr is also already a step ahead in the plans for Thompson’s return moving Jordan Poole to the bench so he can get used to his new role as Sixth Man. It’s paid dividends as the wing is thriving coming off the bench and taking over the primary scoring with the reserve unit.
Andre Iguodala (knee) and Otto Porter (rest) are questionable while Thompson (Achilles) and Wiseman (knee) are rehabbing for their return to the court.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans appeared to have shifted the tide winning five of six games but entering this match have lost three games in a row.
They collected seven wins in the month of December versus four losses and while that included wins versus some elite teams like the Mavericks, Bucks, and Cavaliers in each instance either the primary or secondary star was out of the lineup.
Granted, the Pelicans are without Zion Williamson but they have enough talent to be performing better than their current 14th position in the West.
With more than a half of the season left to play it’s not unrealistic, they could win enough games to climb the ladder. By the same token, it almost seems wiser at this stage to commit to the tank.
Sure they have to convince Zion they are committed to winning but until he shows a commitment to being in better game shape is he really in a position to be making demands?
David Griffin made some terrible moves this offseason the worst was losing Lonzo Ball. It’s time for him to make amends and perhaps shedding the roster of players that don’t fit the future core could bolster the draft coffers.
If he truly believes Brandon Ingram and Zion are a great fit fine, but if not there are teams he could sway to give him picks and probably some nice young assets in exchange for Ingram. Josh Hart is another asset that contending teams would be keen to land.
Tomas Satoransky (quarantine) is questionable for Thursday. Zion Williamson (foot) remains out indefinitely. Did Louzada Silva is still serving his 25 game suspension for PED usage and Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Warriors are 7-3 in their last 10 head to head contests
- The Warriors are 5-4-1 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over Under is 3-7 in the team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Golden State Warriors vs. New Orleans Pelicans NBA Prediction
The Warriors haven’t lost consecutive games this season and while Stephen Curry looks like he could use a break and the Pelicans have the rest advantage I still like Golden State to win and cover.
