Thursday, December 30th finds the Golden State Warriors tipping off versus the Denver Nuggets to complete a home and home series that began in San Francisco on Tuesday with the Nuggets prevailing 89-86.
The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Warriors in 97 of their 181 meetings. Last season the squads played three times with Golden State taking two of the three contests.
Golden State Warriors
Occasionally, Stephen Curry has cold shooting nights but the loss on Tuesday had far more to do with the Nuggets defensive pressure on the star. He exited the first half with just two points but like great shooters- found a way to attack Denver’s defense in the second half.
Curry finished with 23 points including five 3-pointers as well as four rebounds and four assists but was missing his counterpart Draymond Green. Perhaps this match was the perfect example to show how much Draymond offers his team that doesn’t end up on a box score.
His defensive presence is always imperative but the lacking ball movement and him grabbing rebounds to spark the Dubs getting out in transition was clearly missing.
Andrew Wiggins returned from being out in protocols and looked great with 21 points, eight rebounds, an assist, two steals, and a block.
And while Gary Payton II (11) and Juan Toscano-Anderson (10) chipped in double-digit scoring contributions that they were both in the starting rotation for the Warriors speaks to how limited Steve Kerr’s options are right now and they still had a shot to win.
Two Warriors remain in protocols (Draymond Green, Damian Lee) with both questionable for Thursday.
Klay Thompson (Achilles) and James Wiseman (knee) remain out.
Denver Nuggets
It would be unfair to simply state the loss on Tuesday was tied up completely in the Warriors dealing with fatigue and players out due to protocols. Rather, the defensive schemes Nuggets head coach Michael Malone constructed to limit the Warriors were spot on.
Now he has to figure out another way for his Nuggets to do the same thing in back-to-back games against a team who’ll be actively counter-planning and have a motivated superstar ready to even the score (plus likely getting Jordan Poole and other key players back).
Despite the low score fans got a treat witnessing two of the top MVP candidates and Nikola Jokic, in particular, showed why he needs more consideration.
He might not be the sexy pick but his impact is undeniable. He delivered 22 points, 18 rebounds, five assists, four steals, and a block (although he’d love to give back his eight turnovers).
As for the Nuggets, their greatest issue continues to be injuries with Aaron Gordon (hamstring), Monte Morris (knee), Austin Rivers (thumb), and Vlato Cancar (illness) all questionable for Thursday.
Markus Howard (knee) is out an undetermined amount of time. Jamal Murry (ACL) is rehabbing while PJ Dozier (ACL), and Michael Porter Jr. (back surgery) are expected to miss the rest of the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Warriors are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Warriors are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 2-8 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
The Nuggets delivered a defensive half where everything went perfect and then held on for the win Tuesday even needing heroics by Jokic on the final play. While I’m a big Jokic (and Michael Malone) supporter, the odds of them doing that in back-to-back games isn’t high.
