Wednesday, January 5th, finds the Golden State Warriors facing the Dallas Mavericks for the first time this season. The teams will play two consecutive games in Golden State on January 25th and 27th and close out the season series in Dallas on March 3rd.
Both teams last played on Monday with the Warriors beating the Heat 115-108 while the Mavericks defeated the Nuggets 103-89.
The Mavericks hold the all-time record between the clubs with 86 wins in 165 meetings versus the Warriors. Last season, the teams played three times with the Mavericks taking two of the three contests.
Golden State Warriors
The two-year absence of Klay Thompson appears to be nearing an end as he gears up for a possible return this week. Steve Kerr will slowly integrate him back into the rotation undoubtedly with a minute restriction and likely rest him in back-to-back situations.
Clearly, it’s vital to temper expectations as the original injury (torn ACL) occurred on June 13th, 2019 during the 2019 NBA Finals and was followed by the torn Achilles which equates to almost 31 months since he last played competitive ball.
That said, his presence alone and enthusiasm about returning to the court have inspired his teammates who are raving about his return. During the dog days of winter, any little motivation can pay dividends.
To that end, while no one expects Thompson to be the same player, especially initially, his presence is already having an impact.
Whether it was watching him hit 24 deep balls in a row prior to the game versus the Jazz, or Stephen Curry leaking he looked great in a pickup game the club played last week where he shot 50 percent the Dubs are pumped.
Perhaps the most telling comment came from Andrew Wiggins who marveled at how Klay rarely needs to dribble prior to shooting and how much that will improve the Dubs’ offense.
Truth be told, Wiggins could be the greatest benefactor from Thompson’s return. Again, no one will expect him to be at the same level on either end but if he’s close it will take some pressure off Wiggins on the defensive end.
And, as Wiggins noted having another sharpshooter with a high IQ on the floor will unleash more flow and opportunity for everyone.
Dallas Mavericks
It’s seemingly unfathomable the Mavericks were able to play .500 ball while Luka Doncic missed 10 games. If you caught any of those matches the only player with the ability to create their own shots and for others was Jalen Brunson.
Granted, if you dive deeper into those 10 matches the only team Dallas beat with a winning record was the Hornets who were playing without LaMelo Ball.
No doubt the offense will improve with their superstar back but even Doncic can’t erase how stilted the offense looks or the lack of playmakers.
Although they rank 13th on defense this week will test how accurate that mark is with this match against the fourth-best offense as well as the Bulls match later this week who possess the fifth-ranked offense.
Isaiah Thomas signed to a 10-day but is one of five Mavericks dealing with protocols (Trey Burke, Kristaps Porzingis, Boban Marjanovic, JaQuori McLaughlin) are all questionable for Wednesday. Willie Cauley-Stein (personal) is also questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Mavericks are 7-3 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Mavericks are 8-2 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Warriors
- The over/under is 8-2 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
While the Mavericks like to muck things up and slow down teams in transition they’ll be hard-pressed to stop the Warriors ball movement. Factor in Stephen Curry had an off-shooting night versus the Heat so he’ll be looking for a rebound performance.
