Golden State Warriors
There’s an article out on a Warriors’ fan site about how the trio of Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson are all within two percentage points of achieving the 50/40/90 shooting splits from the field, three-point arc and free-throw line. Curry and Durant have already done it earlier in their careers, along with Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash in recent memory. But for multiple players on the same team to do it would have extra significance.
Of course, Curry is back. You may have seen the highlights of him torching the Grizzlies for ten threes in his return before the New Year or Steve Kerr gushing over how good it is just to have him back and playing.
The Warriors haven’t been perfect lately. They lost home games to Denver and Charlotte in the last week, plus a day, of 2017. But Houston has really struggled since its long winning streak, which has Golden State a game up in the West.
Golden State goes to Houston on Thursday in a game Curry will play, despite the back-to-back. The Rockets will be without James Harden for the next couple weeks, which has opened up a window for the Warriors to put some space between them and Houston.
Dallas has lost twice to Golden State already this season but the Mavs are playing their best basketball of the season ahead of this game after sweeping a three-game road trip and extending their winning streak to a season-high four games.
Harrison Barnes scored 24 points in Dallas’ last win of 2017, in Oklahoma City against a Thunder team that had been playing well going into the game. Dennis Smith Jr. scored 19 points in the win.
Smith has really provided the difference since returning from a groin injury seven games ago. He has scored 40 points over his last two games and gives Dallas another weapon that can score off of isolation. Without Smith, Dallas is a very structured offense. It still is with him, but Rick Carlisle is slowly giving his rookie point guard more freedom to makes plays himself, which is a threat every good team must have in the NBA. Between now and next season, Smith will only get more influence in Dallas’ offense.
