The Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors meet for the first time this season each playing their third game in four nights.
Detroit will be on the second game of a back-to-back playing Cleveland on Friday, while the Raptors won Thursday in the second game of a back-to-back in Philly.
Detroit Pistons
Top draft pick Cade Cunningham got a later start to the season than his counterparts and is slowly rounding into form, looking more comfortable each time out.
This three-game road trip is also offering a unique opportunity to face the three draft picks who were selected sequentially after him.
In the first of the series, he faced Jalen Green who scored more (23) with five rebounds and two assists.
Yet it was Cunningham who filled up more boxes with 20 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block plus got bragging rights with the victory.
While neither rookie has been overly efficient, particularly from the perimeter, again Cunningham (4 of 8) bested Green in that category (3 of 11). Friday he faces third pick Evan Mobley and fourth pick Scottie Barnes on Saturday.
The Pistons rank 30th offensively and 20th defensively but with the rookie back in the fold and Jerami Grant rounding into form they’ll be looking to improve on both those marks.
Kelly Olynyk suffered a knee sprain and will miss the next six to eight weeks. Isaiah Livers (foot) is out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
With Joel Embiid felled by COVID, the Raptors caught a break, albeit they were also without Pascal Siakam who they elected to rest as they ease him back,
The Raptors offense looked markedly better in Philly than it did the night prior when they were embarrassed in Boston and part of it is due to familiarity.
Ultimately, it’s going to take time for Siakam to develop chemistry with new players like standout rookie Scottie Barnes and other new faces that are just getting acquainted with how he plays.
A quintet scored in double-figures led by Fred VanVleet (32 points, six rebounds, seven assists). OG Anunoby and Gary Trent Jr. each scored 20 while Chris Boucher rediscovered his scoring touch (17 points).
Barnes filled up the stat sheet again with 13 points, nine rebounds (six offensive boards), four assists, a steal, and two blocks.
Khem Birch (knee) was only supposed to miss a few days but is listed as out while Yuta Watanabe (calf) is questionable.

Free Detroit Pistons vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
For the past few seasons, a rivalry of sorts developed between these clubs based more on the coaches than the players.
Dwane Casey won 2018 Coach of the Year for Toronto and received it after being fired, hired by the Pistons, and replaced by his assistant Nurse who won the title in his first season and COY in 2020.
Casey’s acceptance speech perhaps offered a bit of insight into his vitriol as he famously thanked all his Raptors assistants except Nurse and spoke glowingly of the Pistons’ history of being a winning franchise.
Another oddity is in each of the three seasons since Casey was let go the teams have taken turns sweeping the other so if that trend continues this year would favor a Raptors sweep.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Pistons +9.5
Toronto is 5-1 on the road and 2-5 at home and after this match, hit the West Coast for a six-game road trip. They have the rest advantage and theorthetically should win easily but I just can’t ignore how much Casey gets motivated for these encounters.
