Tuesday, December 21st finds the Detroit Pistons playing the New York Knicks in their first of three meetings this season. Detroit will host the next two games between the clubs on December 29th and March 27th.
The Knicks played Saturday in a 107-114 losing effort to Boston. The Pistons played a back-to-back set Saturday/Sunday versus the Rockets and Heat splitting those matches with a 107-116 loss to Houston and a franchise sizing mark in futility with a 100-90 win versus Miami.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Knicks taking all three contests and are on a current five-game winning streak versus Detroit. The Knicks hold the all-time record having bested the Pistons in 211 of their 387 matches.
Detroit Pistons
Through 29 games the Pistons have established themselves as the worst team in the association — or the most committed to tanking. The latter side of that equation was highlighted by the win versus the Heat.
If this young squad could pull out a win to avoid becoming the worst roster in Pistons history against the Heat (who don’t give up in any game) then why can’t they perform better against lower-tier clubs?
Although the Heat was without Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro they beat quality teams (Bucks, Bulls, and 76ers) shorthanded so this wasn’t a gimme match.
In the victory, Saddiq Bey led the way with 26 points. Isaiah Stewart grabbed 14 rebounds while rookie Cade Cunningham dished 10 assists but had issues with personal fouls all day ultimately fouling out of the match with only four points.
Hamidou Diallo (15), Frank Jackson (12), and Killian Hayes (11) were the other double-figure scorers.
Jerami Grant (thumb) is out indefinitely while Kelly Olynyk (knee) will miss between six and eight weeks. The six weeks is up just prior to Christmas so Olynyk should be back mid to late January.
New York Knicks
With the Knicks dealing with so many players out head coach Tom Thibodeau finally released Kemba Walker from a series of DNP CD (did not play – coach’s decision) and he responded with a season-best 29 points.
Walker landed in Thibodeau’s dog house because the Knicks struggled defensively with him on the floor and that factor although somewhat assuaged by his scoring needs to be consistently improved if the point guard wants to keep getting playing time.
At worst, the Knicks should play him as a reserve so perhaps he could gain traction as a deadline trade chip. Although you have to wonder if Sam Presti didn’t see the potential in gaining draft picks out of him then how many franchises will pony up picks?
The other offseason addition, Evan Fournier scored a season-best 32 points while Julius Randle flirted with a triple-double of 20 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Alek Burks scored 19 as the only other double-figure scorer.
While the Knicks are shorthanded the fact Boston’s reserves outscored them 47 to three was shocking.
Derrick Rose (ankle) missed the game Saturday and is questionable for Tuesday. Six Knicks are in health and safety protocols and all listed as questionable for Tuesday.
That group includes RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, Quentin Grimes, Obi Toppin, Kevin Knox, and Miles McBride.
