Thursday, December 23rd, finds the Detroit Pistons facing the Miami Heat in their third meeting of this season. The Heat won the initial match on November 23rd (100-92) but the Pistons stopped a 14-game skid beating Miami 100-90 on December 19th.
The clubs will play once more this season in Miami on March 15th.
Both teams last played on Tuesday with the Pistons losing 91-105 to the Knicks while the Heat hammered the Pacers 125-96.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Heat winning two of the three contests. The Heat holds the all-time record with 63 wins in 118 matches versus the Pistons.
Detroit Pistons
Okay so the Thunder took a great deal of heat for that 73 point loss to the Grizzlies but they were missing two of their best players and two key role players.
The fact they’ve won four games since that loss while the Pistons just recorded their first win since November 17th should have the league looking at them and the purposeful tanking effort.
Sorry, but suddenly the Pistons were able to beat a team after 14 losses in order to avoid being considered the worst team in franchise history but weren’t able to use that same effort in between?
Especially recently as prior to the streak ending six of the eight teams they played were either lottery-bound clubs or teams mired in losing streaks.
Although tweaks were made to the lottery system it’s still not ideal and further steps need to be taken otherwise teams like the Pistons will purposely lose to win back-to-back top draft picks and potentially two generational talents.
While it seemed the Pistons would almost be forced into winning scenarios with so many teams missing core players news Cade Cunningham (and Cheick Diallo) entered health and safety protocols perhaps offsets that thought.
For Thursday, Killian Hayes (illness) is probable while Frank Jackson (ankle) is questionable. Jerami Grant (thumb) is out indefinitely. Kelly Olynyk (knee) was expected to miss between six to eight weeks – he’s been out since November 11th so a January return is likely.
Miami Heat
It’s not often a team gets an immediate opportunity to face an opponent who just beat them but Miami won’t need inspiration for this match with only three days since their last meeting.
Although COVID has decimated many team rosters the Heat only have Caleb Martin out but the list of walking wounded is long. Clearly, the greatest absence is Bam Adebayo (thumb) who’ll miss a minimum of a month (up to six weeks), and Jimmy Butler.
The Heat captain has missed 11 of the last 12 due to an injured tailbone which has put extensive weight on Kyle Lowry’s shoulders who has impressively done some heavy lifting.
Without their two stars the Heat have had to adjust their style. Butler typically draws fouls and gets easy points at the line while Adebayo is on the glass scoring inside.
The biggest shift has seen Miami using the personnel they have and Lowry is feeding all the young 3-point snipers which is resulting in a greater percentage of their scoring coming from the perimeter.
Ultimately this will pay dividends in the post season because it will afford Erik Spoelstra with offensive versatility.
Butler (tailbone) Caleb Martin (health and safety), and PJ Tucker (knee) are questionable. Adebayo (thumb) is out 4 to 6 weeks while Markieff Morris (neck) and Victor Oladipo (knee) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Heat are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- The teams are 4-4-2 in the last 10 head to head
- Over Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Detroit Pistons vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
After losing to the Pistons on the weekend Kyle Lowry will have the look of a rabid dog to start this match and will have whoever is available on the same page to get revenge. Couple that with both Cunningham and Grant being absent and this could get ugly quick.
