Monday, February 1st, the Detroit Pistons host the Utah Jazz as the teams play for the first time in the 2020-21 campaign.
Denver is riding a high having ended the Jazz 11-game win streak. This game also marks the first time the Nuggets will face their former teammate Jerami Grant who opted to leave in free agency despite reportedly getting a better offer from Denver.
Last season, the squads played twice with each team winning one contest. The Jazz holds the all-time record having won 51 matches of the 91 played.
Detroit Pistons
Jerami Grant’s decision to leave a team that went to the Western Conference Finals to play for a team that didn’t make the playoffs was multi-tiered.
The forward wanted to play for a franchise with a Black coach and general manager. No doubt he was also buoyed by the prospect of playing a bigger role.
With Denver, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray are the primary options, and the offensively gifted Michael Porter Jr. was tapped as the potential to become the third priority.
In fairness, Grant hadn’t been tasked with as much responsibility offensively and it was only in the playoffs that he truly began to demonstrate his capacity to be more of a two-way producer instead of a defensive specialist who shot the occasional 3-point shot.
While he’s proving the bubble wasn’t a fluke he’s also on a team with five wins ranked 29th in the NBA. The Lakers win was impressive, but they followed it up with a 118-91 loss to the Warriors with Grant (18) and Josh Jackson (17) the only players to reach double-figures.
Killian Hayes is out healing from a labral tear to his hip and is expected to remain out until late March.
Denver Nuggets
Having lost the first meeting against the Jazz this season the Nuggets were dialed in on Sunday and ready for the rematch. Utah was riding the longest win streak this season with 11 wins in a row but that run came to an end in Denver.
Nikola Jokic was (as I predicted) dialed in and ready for this contest. Denver jumped on Utah early scoring 43 points in the first quarter, led 79-54 at the half, posting a final score of 128-117.
The Joker registered his 20th consecutive double-double which means he has one in every game played this year. The difference on this particular day was his point tally of 47 which equaled his career-best. He also grabbed 12 rebounds and dished five assists.
Will Barton dropped 16 points while Jamal Murray scored 16. Michael Porter Jr. (11), Facundo Campazzo (11), and Paul Millsap (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Murray is playing in spite of being hampered by shoulder and leg injuries, however, Gary Harris left the Sunday match early with an adductor strain and is questionable for Monday.
PJ Dozier (hamstring) has missed three games and is listed as day-to-day. Greg Whittington has a left knee sprain that will keep him out indefinitely.
