These two well-matched clubs meet in the Carolinas on Wednesday night, both looking to jostle for playoff positioning in the East. Detroit and Charlotte currently hold the six and seven-seeds in the Eastern Conference, respectively.
A win on Wednesday night will get them that little bit closer to entrenched in the upper half of a league with great disparity, and within striking distance of some of the East’s big boys.
Detroit Pistons
Under new head coach Dwane Casey, the Pistons have been competitive from the get-go in 2018-19. Their engine (you have to use such a metaphor with the team from Motown) has been high-flying forward Blake Griffin, who’s always had the ability to take over a game with his athleticism. Yet, he needs the ratchet the game up a notch on Wednesday night.

Why? Because Detroit has been playing extremely streaky of late. The Pistons had won five games in a row, but most recently have dropped five straight ballgames, to sit at just a single game over .500.
The Pistons must get this turned around quick before it turns into a major slump. A road trip to Charlotte affords the potential opportunity for that to happen.
Elsewhere, Detroit has seen strong performances from defensive beast Andre Drummond, as well as the ‘Reggie Duo’, of Jackson and Bullock. All four players (incl. Griffin obviously) have averaged scoring in the double digits, and the ball is also distributed equitably on this team. Detroit’s one notable shortcoming is poor three-point shooting, which can be a real problem in today’s NBA.
If you meet an opponent that is inferior in most ways but is better at shooting the three, that can be a great equalizer. It’s something the Pistons must keep working diligently on.

The Pistons are coming off a tough loss to the powerful Philadelphia 76ers, in a game they kept close. It perhaps shows enough encouraging signs that the visitors are going to travel to North Carolina and take care of business on the road.
Charlotte Hornets
The home team for Wednesday night’s tilt sits right on a .500 record, just one game back of Detroit.
The Buzz actually sit tops of a terrible Southeast division, with every other team under .500. Charlotte should have some bounce in its step, as it is coming off a couple of nice wins against the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks.
Like most of the lower-middle class in the NBA, the Hornets have one player that does the bulk of the offensive heavy lifting; they can’t all be the Golden State Warriors, guys. Guard Kemba Walker is a jack-of-all-trades for this club, and has been for years now.
His 25.8 PPG, 6.2 assists and four and a half boards (not bad for a player that stands just 6’1 – and probably less if he wasn’t measured in NBA-inflated standards) is unquestionably the catalyst.

The Hornets also count on contributions from a fistful of guards: Jeremy Lamb, Malik Monk and elder statesman Tony Parker all average double-digit scoring. The 36-year old Frenchman can still pour in about 10 points and about five dimes per game.
Charlotte doesn’t have much of a low-post presence; Cody Zeller is not being confused by anyone with Shaquille O’Neal. Still, the quickness and the penetrating guards has been enough to guide the Hornets to an adequate record so far.

Free Detroit Pistons vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction:
Detroit could be in trouble if Charlotte starts striping the three ball, but I think in general, the visitors’ size and strength down low will be too much for the Hornets to handle. It’s true that pace, ball movement and shooting is far more important than it was a generation ago, but there’s still much to be said for strong rebounding, especially on the offensive glass.
The Pistons should have a noticeable rebounding and rim protection advantage, and I think that, combined with the urgency of turning around this losing streak, will make the difference in the Queen City on Wednesday night.
