Saturday, March 13th finds the Detroit Pistons playing the Brooklyn Nets for the second time this season. The Pistons won the initial match 122-111 on February 9th.
This match marks the first game these teams are meeting since Detroit bought out Blake Griffin and he joined the Nets on a veteran minimum contract.
The Pistons hold the all-time record between the clubs with 109 wins in 182 meetings. Last season, the teams played three times with the Nets winning twice and the Pistons once.
Detroit Pistons
In their first game back from the break the Pistons were once again on the losing side of the scoreboard but they fought to the bitter end. Ultimately, they lost 102-105 to the Hornets.
Detroit held the lead with less than three minutes to go but like they’ve done much of the season weren’t able to hold it. While the Pistons can be a tough out they simply don’t have a deep enough roster to be competitive in those clutch moments.
Jerami Grant was back after missing the last two games due to a quadriceps contusion. The rest did him well as he delivered 32 points (albeit on 24 shot attempts), eight rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
Saddiq Bey scored 14 points while Svi Mykhailiuk chipped in with 11 as the only other double-figure scores. Dwane Casey went deep into his bench using 12 different players.
Killian Hayes suffered a labral tear to a muscle in his hip that has caused him to miss 30 games and will keep him out until the end of March. Jahlil Okafor had a knee procedure on February 10th that will keep him off the court for six to eight weeks.
Brooklyn Nets
Putting ‘the rich get richer’ deal, in perspective, Griffin played in 138 of a possible 218 games for the Pistons over his three and a half seasons. Including the buyout which reportedly left $13 million on the table, the Pistons paid BG $158.2 million.
Given veteran minimum contracts are based on years of service Griffen likely signed a deal of $2.3 to $2.5 million with Brooklyn.
In essence, the Pistons paid Griffin $1.14 million per game so three of those Pistons games is the price it’s costing the Nets for his services the rest of the season. Doesn’t seem right, does it?
He didn’t play in the Nets’ first game back saying he’s healthy but they (the Nets) want to ease him into the rotation. That statement might point to just how deep this Brooklyn team is.
Kevin Durant also won’t be back this week having missed 12 of the last 13 games and 10 in a row with a hamstring injury.
Turns out neither Griffin or KD were missed not when they have two other superstars to rely on. Kyrie Irving (40 points, 8 rebounds) and James Harden (22 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists) both delivered big games on route to the 121-109 victory versus the Celtics.
Durant (hamstring), Griffin (assimilation), and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (knee) are all expected to miss Saturday. Spencer Dinwiddie (knee) is out for the season.
