On Wednesday, March 24th, the Denver Nuggets meets the Toronto Raptors for the first time this season.
Last season, the squads played twice the splitting the series with one win each. The Nuggets hold the all-time record having won 29 matches of the 48 played.
Denver Nuggets
With both LeBron James and Joel Embiid sidelined due to injury it affords Nikola Jokic, Damian Lillard, and James Harden with an opportunity to put their stamp on the 2020-21 MVP.
Jokic and Dame have a better shot given they only have one superstar partner and play in the much more difficult Western Conference.
The issue of course is they’ll need to move up the standings into one of the top seeds. Currently, Denver is seeded fifth and Portland sixth so there is work to be done.
One big problem the Nuggets need to fix is their defense where they began the week ranked 16th. Part of the problem is Gary Harris is still out having missed 21 of 22 games (14 consecutive) with an adductor injury.
The other issue is starting the trio of Jokic with Paul Millsap and Michael Porter Jr. While MPJ is still young his defense is lacking so Mike Malone may want to utilize JaMychal Green more in this role given his defensive chops.
The Nuggets have been on a roll winning eight of their last 10 games but arrive in Tampa after a tough loss to the Pelicans.
Toronto Raptors
This is by far the lowest point the Raptors have been in since before Kyle Lowry became a Raptor nine years ago. While Toronto dealt with adversity they built a culture of being consistent playoff contenders and a tough, gritty club culminating in the title run two seasons ago.
Last year, despite losing Kawhi Leonard Toronto produced the second-best record in the Association and came one bucket away from returning to the Eastern Conference Finals.
This year the Raptors have been snake-bitten right from the start as the only team that had to uproot their franchise and play out of another location. Toronto is mired in their worst losing streak in over a decade since they lost this many games (13 in-a-row in 2010-11).
With the five players back who missed 20 or more days due to COVID the team still hasn’t recovered losing to the team who had a 20-game losing streak (Rockets) on Monday in a back-to-back set that saw them flying from Cleveland to Houston (an odd scheduling choice by the powers that be).
Trade rumors of Lowry and/or Norman Powell are circulating no doubt affecting the players. Frustration and friction is mounting which played out with reports of Pascal Siakam and coach Nick Nurse exchanging words following the loss in Cleveland.
