Thursday, December 9th finds the Denver Nuggets visiting the San Antonio Spurs for the second meeting between these clubs and the first of two consecutive games at the AT& T Center. The Nuggets won the initial meeting 102-96 on October 22nd.
Denver is playing the second game of a back-to-back set having defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 120-114 on Wednesday while the Spurs lost 109-121 loss to the Knicks on Tuesday.
Last season the clubs played three times with Nuggets winning two of the three contests. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 119 wins in 193 matches versus the Nuggets.
Denver Nuggets
Playing in the second game of a back-to-back set is always difficult when the opposing team has the rest advantage and the first game requires overtime to settle. Furthermore, the Nuggets aren’t walking into San Antonio they are limping into the AT&T Center.
Several Nuggets are out due to COVID-19 and in the NBA health and safety protocol program. Specifically, that includes the trio of Austin Rivers, rookie Bones Hyland, and big man Bol Bol.
Denver is already missing the services of Jamal Murray who is rehabbing from his torn ACL as well as Michael Porter Jr. who had his third back surgery and is likely lost for the season. PJ Dozier was also lost for the season with a torn ACL.
The most concerning name on the injury report is Nikola Jokic who is nursing an arm injury but since he played on Wednesday after being listed as questionable presumably he’ll also suit up on Thursday. Ditto for Will Barton (illness) who was questionable but also played.
Punctuating how important their presence is they were the top scorers for Denver in the win that pushes Denver back to .500 on the season. Jokic was masterful dropping a triple-double of 39 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists plus a steal.
Barton delivered as well with 20 points while Monte Morris (11), Aaron Gordon (10), and JaMychal Green (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
San Antonio Spurs
The young Spurs continue their teeter-totter season following up a four-game winning streak with back-to-back losses to the Suns and Knicks.
Through the last two weeks, Derrick White has channeled his better performances from two seasons back and led the Spurs on Tuesday with 26 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
Dejounte Murray has also been stellar of late filling up the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Doug McDermott and Jakob Poeltl each scored 13 points while Bryn Forbes chipped in 12 points as the only reserve player to score in double-figures.
Keldon Johnson sprained his ankle and was forced to exit the game making him questionable for this match.
New York’s perimeter shooting caused the Spurs issues with them connecting on 18 of 38 long balls (47.4%) but the Knicks also beat them on the glass 52-43. San Antonio played to their identity moving the ball (30 assists) and also outscored New York in the paint 54 to 32.
Devin Vassell (quad) has missed the last five games and is questionable for Thursday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nuggets are 8-2 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Denver Nuggets vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Prediction:
The glass and the line could be impactful as the Spurs take the fewest free throws and allow opponents to grab an average of 47 rebounds per contest. Jakob Poeltl will be tasked with slowing the reigning MVP while Jokic will attempt to exploit him.
Denver is 1-3 in second games of back-to-backs and while those losses came versus the Jazz, Mavs, and Bulls don’t sleep on the Spurs pulling off the upset.
