Monday, June 7th the Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns begin their Western Conference semi-finals series. Denver won two of three matches between the clubs this season requiring overtime in both.
All three games occurred in January prior to Jamal Murray’s torn ACL and before the trade deadline when Aaron Gordon joined Denver. Nikola Jokic delivered a double-double in each contest while the Suns had at least two players score 20 or more points with different players succeeding in each match.
Denver Nuggets
What the first round confirmed is the Nuggets are a very well-coached team with quality support players and this season’s MVP — Nikola Jokic. When Damian Lillard drops 55 points and your club still loses the game that speaks to just how great the Joker is and how he impacts winning beyond scoring.
Jokic averaged 33 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and shot 42.9 percent from deep on 5.8 attempts versus the Blazers.
Michael Porter Jr. stepped up as the secondary scoring option averaging 18.8 points and shooting 41.5% from deep.
With all due respect to Portland, the Suns are a much better defensive squad. Presumably, underrated defender Mikal Bridges will draw the primary assignment on MPJ with Jae Crowder possibly also getting time when he’s not helping out with Jokic.
Monte Morris stepped up to become an x-factor versus the Blazers and will be a key factor again.
PJ Dozier (adductor strain) and Will Barton (hamstring strain) are both out but could return at some point in this series.
Phoenix Suns
While some expected the Lakers to beat the Suns even after Anthony Davis went down injured I wasn’t on that bus. I’ll admit Chris Paul’s shoulder worried me but the Suns had a much deeper, more well-rounded team.
This series should be a more intense chess match as both teams have stars, are capable of playing two-way ball, and quality coaches capable of pushing the right buttons.
Closing the series on Thursday allowed Chris Paul four days to rest that shoulder and it should pay dividends with the vet and Devin Booker having the decided backcourt advantage in this series. Booker averaged 29.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists shooting 42.9% from deep versus Portland.
Much like round 1, the main challenge comes in the frontcourt. Just like Anthony Davis feasted in the first round, Jokic will pose the greatest issues for Monty Williams and their young center.
Deandre Ayton had a great series versus LA but Nikola Jokic presents an entirely different test for him since he controls so much of what the Nuggets do.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nuggets are 8-2 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Denver Nuggets vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
With Jokic capable of scoring inside or by spreading the floor the issue will be how to keep Ayton near the basket as a rim protector if he’s tasked with guarding the Nuggets star.
Likewise, the Nuggets will have their hands full with stopping Booker but also need to limit CP3’s ability to get everyone rolling via his game management mastery.
The reserve units could be the true x-factors in this series with Morris and Payne the obvious players to watch. However, Michael Malone could use JaVale McGee on Ayton plus there is the potential for Dozier and/or Barton returning which would give Denver another edge.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Suns ATS
In round 1, the Suns took their opening match while the Nuggets lost and both last played Thursday. I’m leaning to the home team winning the opener although I vacillated back and forth on the spread, I think Phoenix will cover based on end-of-game free throws.
