Sunday, January 10th finds the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks tipping off at Madison Square Gardens.
Last season, the squads played twice with Denver taking both contests. The Nuggets hold the all-time record having won 47 of 91 matches played.
Denver Nuggets
While the NBA has navigated the coronavirus pandemic suffering only one game postponement this weekend several teams got hit hard.
The 76ers were one of those teams with Seth Curry testing positive which equated to his absence as well as Tobias Harris, Matisse Thybulle, Shake Milton, and Vincent Poirier. More concerning was the loss of Ben Simmons (sore knee) and Joel Embiid (back).
As wise men say – you can only play the team in front of you and the Nuggets made sure to avoid playing down to a team missing talent as they went on to record a 115-103 victory although the game was never as close at that score might indicate.
The greatest benefactor was Gary Harris who hasn’t exactly been feasting offensively but registered 21 points. It was the first time Harris cleared 20 points since November 30 of 2019.
While Doc Rivers had the minimum eight players dressed, he only played seven since Mike Scott is still nursing an injury. Conversely, Mike Malone played all 15 Nuggets.
Nikola Jokic came one rebound shy of a triple-double with 15 points, 12 assists (nine rebounds). Jamal Murray and Will Barton each scored 14 while JaMychal Green and Monte Morris each chipped in 12 points.
Michael Porter Jr. has missed the last five dealing with the NBA’s health and safety protocols while Greg Whittington has a left knee sprain. Both are listed as out indefinitely.
New York Knicks
The team from the Mecca has surprised early this season and was on a three-game win streak as they faced the supposedly tanking Thunder on Friday.
Tom Thibodeau has the Knicks playing consistent defense which kept them in this low-scoring match but ultimately OKC captured the win with a better overall two-way effort.
In the loss, RJ Barrett led the Knicks in scoring with 19 points along with seven boards, two assists, a steal, and a block. Julius Randle continues to impress posting another double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds plus seven assists.
Elfrid Payton (16) and Austin Rivers (12) were the other double-figure contributors.
On Thursday, Shams Charania reported the Knicks are signing Taj Gibson and waiving Omari Spellman although Gibson didn’t appear in the Friday match.
Kevin Knox is dealing with a sore knee but is probable for Sunday. Obi Toppin has missed the last eight games with a strained calf and won’t dress Sunday. Frank Ntilikina (knee) and Alec Burks (ankle) are out indefinitely.

With the Nuggets holding a sizeable advantage I took that fact differently. Murray has sited MSG as a place he loves playing in and now he has extra motivation as he faces friend and fellow Canadian RJ Barrett.
