Denver put an end to a four-game losing streak with a forty-five-point beatdown of the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night.
It was the final game of a four-game home stand and the Nuggets needed it to avoid going winless at the Pepsi Center, which is awfully rare and completely unexpected in a season in which the Nuggets look like a playoff team.
Perhaps that notion is a look-ahead, though. Denver started the season strong but it’s still just so early. The Nuggets haven’t had many injuries to deal with yet and you have to think they’re coming, eventually.
Torrey Craig started the season as the starting small forward but he’s been relegated to the bench in favor of Juancho Hernangomez. Jamal Murray came off the bench and Monte Morris started at point guard on Thursday.
Murray ignited the second unit by scoring fourteen and pacing an offense that just obliterated the Hawks’ reserves. Malik Beasley and and Trey Lyles combined for twenty-nine points and eleven Nuggets scored in total.
New Orleans Pelicans
Denver will get Friday off, while the Pelicans host the Knicks. If you’re going to have a back-to-back, playing them both at home and starting with the Knicks isn’t a bad way to do it.
The Pelicans have won three out of four but it was three in a row before they lost their last game against Minnesota, which featured both Robert Covington and Dario Saric, who came over from Philly for Jimmy Butler.
Wesley Johnson has been starting some games for New Orleans. He’s done pretty well for himself after he was regarded as a bust as the fourth pick of Minnesota back in 2010 out of Syracuse.
In eight games this season, Johnson is averaging a modest six points per game and about three rebounds in twenty minutes. It isn’t much but he doesn’t take a lot of shots and plays defense. In other words, he’s found out how to get on the court and stay there in the NBA. That has a certain value in this league.
When you have Anthony Davis, it’s sort of all you need. Davis is averaging nearly thirty-eight minutes per game, which lead the league at the moment. His 12.7 rebounds per game are a career-high, if that number holds up. He’s never gobbled up more than a dozen in a season.
