The Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks will complete their baseball set Sunday, November 20th. Dallas took advantage of Jamal Murray joining Nikola Jokic in quarantine removing their top two players resulting in an easy 127-99 victory in the match Friday.
The teams will play four times this season with Denver hosting on December 6th and February 15th. It’s the first baseball set for the Mavs and the second for the Nuggets who swept the Spurs.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Mavericks winning two of the three contests. The Mavericks have won on 94 occasions in the 183 games played all time.
Denver Nuggets
Losing your best two players can’t help but impact the bottom line. That’s what happened when Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray both had to go into quarantine.
Denver was leading scoring, and shooting a ridiculous 50%/40% from the field/perimeter so suffered a small step back without their stars but I still think this is the most dangerous team in the West.
Specifically, their points per game dropped to 114.9 (11th) while the field goal percentage dipped ever so slightly to 49.4% (2nd) but they remained the top dog of the perimeter shooting 41.3%.
Of course, I’ll keep asking for them to play just a bit more defense so my Western Conference finalist prediction comes true.
Defensively, the Nuggets allow opponents to score 115.0 points per game, ranking tied for 19th. Denver opponents shoot 49.2% from the field (28th) and 35.1% from the perimeter (11th).
Ish Smith (calf), and Aaron Gordon (illness) are questionable while Nikola Jokic (quarantine), and Jamal Murray (quarantine) were downgraded to out Sunday. Collin Gillespie (leg) is out indefinitely.
Dallas Mavericks
Although Doncic continues to put up stats unseen since Wilt Chamberlain his teammates struggle to offer him much assistance offensively.
Clearly, it’s a big problem with Dallas ranking in the bottom 10 in scoring 109.9 points per game (23rd), shooting 46.1% from the field (20th), and 34.2% from the perimeter (21st).
Conversely, defensively they limit opponents to the fewest points per game (105.8). They rank in the middle for efficiency with foes shooting 47.1% (20th) from the field and 35.9% from the perimeter (17th) but when a team can’t score umm – hello -you’re doing something right.
The issue for Jason Kidd is his roster is primarily comprised of defensive players who aren’t capable of ball handling and the ones who have offensive versatility are his weakest defenders (Christian Wood for example).
Maxi Kleber (back) is questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nuggets are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Mavericks are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Nuggets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against Dallas.
- Dallas is 7-3 SU in their last 10 games.
Free Denver Nuggets vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
I’m getting similar ‘red flag’ vibes about Dallas that I had about the Cavs just prior to their five-game skid which proved accurate.
When Luka shot 17 of 50 and the Mavs lost consecutive games to the Magic and Wizards. The assumption was he was fatigued because he quickly got back on track- BUT wait – are we missing the bigger issue?
Those were road games – two of the FIVE Dallas has played and they’ve lost FOUR of them? Or what about the fact they seem to struggle with the slightest adversity (they are 1-2 in second games of back-to-back sets including a loss to the Rockets)?
We’re witnessing teams deal with real adversity like the Nuggets, Raptors, Bucks, and Heat who are all bogged down by major injuries, or clubs who’ve played much tougher schedules with 10 road games already banked.
My concern is Dallas lacks depth and versatility and they sure don’t exude grittiness or resiliency. Aside from Luka is there any Maverick player teams fear?
Perhaps I’m raising unnecessary concerns, but what if Doncic tweaks an ankle or suffers a freak incident like Siakam did slipping on the Mavs court? What if a couple of core members get injured like the above teams?
How confident would you be that Dallas could navigate that type of adversity? I’m not confident they can withstand a road trip so suffice to say I have no confidence they could navigate any major health adversity.
It’s definitely something to keep an eye on but if I had Mark Cuban’s ear I’d be aggressively pitching the need for a bonafide number two (and #3) for Luka.
Dallas has the major edge given whose out for Denver and I’m not suggesting Michael Malone raise the white flag before the game even starts.
But, I do think this is the PERFECT TIME for the Nuggets to focus defensively to get clicking on all cylinders for when Jokic and Murray are ready to return. So — I’m going to will it into existence and while the Mavs get the W – the Nuggets will keep it closer than that rich 9.5 spread.
