Friday, December 2nd the Denver Nuggets and Atlanta Hawks meet for the first time this season. Denver will host the second meeting on February 4th.
Both teams played Wednesday with Denver routing the Rockets 120-100 while the Hawks also feasted beating the Magic 125-108.
Last season the clubs played twice with the Nuggets taking both contests. The Hawks hold the all-time record with 51 wins in 95 matches.
Denver Nuggets
That heat the Suns feel on their backs is the Nuggets who are a single game back with the schedule about to flip in their favor. Denver already has as many road wins (8-5) as the Suns have played (3-5).
And Phoenix is about to be tested via their upcoming road HEAVY schedule featuring 16 of 24 away from the Footprint Center and only six of those 24 are sub-.500 teams including Miami who already beat Phoenix.
In contrast, Denver’s next 26 games feature EIGHT road games including this match and as of December 8th, the 6-2 home Nuggets will play FIFTEEN of 19 at Ball Arena including hosting the Suns on Christmas and January 11th.
Hopefully, you took my advice preseason and put some money on the Nuggets to win the Northwest and as the dark horse title contender. A take I’m feeling even more confident about 20 games in!
Denver ranks ninth scoring 115.4 points per game and second for proficiency from both the field: 49.8% and perimeter: 40.4%.
Defensively, they rank 14th for opponent scoring allowing 113.1 points per game, while foes shoot 48.5% from the field and 35.6% from the perimeter ranking 27th and 15th overall.
Michael Porter Jr. (heel), and Jeff Green (knee) are questionable. Collin Gillespie (leg) is out indefinitely
Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks look good — ON PAPER but watch a few games and it’s clear Trae Young is determined to channel Rockets-era James Harden (read: dribble the air out of the ball and ref bait).
Pundits thought Dejounte Murray would propel Atlanta upward, but Atlanta isn’t meshing (yet) nor is Trae showing any inkling of adapting to best utilize Murray and his other teammates (cough – John Collins). To that end, I offer some sobering Trae Young statistics for comparison…
2021-22:
- 20.3 FGA – 28.4 points
- 8.0 3PFGA – 38.2%
- 34.4 usage rate
2022-23:
- 21.8 FGA – 27.8 points
- 7.4 3PFGA – 30.3%
- 34.2 usage rate
His scoring is slightly lower, shots a bit higher but the concerning part of the above equation is his usage rate is virtually identical and maybe he rubbed his arms one too many times because his 3-point shot is ice cold.
Atlanta ranks 13th in scoring averaging 113.9 points per game, 19th from the field shooting 46.5%, and 27th from the perimeter: 32.5%. On defense, opponents score 113.5 points (16th), 46.5% field goal percentage (13th), and 32.7% perimeter percentage (2nd).
John Collins (ankle), De’Andre Hunter (ankle), Justin Holiday (quarantine), and Jalen Johnson (ankle) are questionable. Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) is out.

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
I have to admit, I’m flummoxed by the oddsmakers picking the Hawks to beat the Nuggets. Atlanta’s record ‘looks good’ but dive deeper to find they are 6-3 versus sub-500 teams and 6-7 versus teams over .500.
Seriously – one of these teams is a legitimate title contender while the Hawks are fool’s gold and could just as easily end up being a play-in team! I’m thrilled to get points on a game I think Denver wins SU!
