Thursday, November 10th, the Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards play the first of two matches this season. Dallas will host the second game on January 24th.
The Mavericks arrive having served up a lemon losing 87-94 to the Magic on the front side of a back-to-back while the Wizards have a major rest advantage last playing Monday in a 108-100 victory versus the Hornets.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Wizards winning both contests. The Mavericks hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 46 of their 81 matches.
Dallas Mavericks
Every player has an off night or takes a team for granted and that was the case for Luka Doncic and the Mavericks as they fell to the Magic.
Orlando held Doncic under 30 points for the first time this season as he shot 9 of 29 from the field and 2 of 11 from 3-point range finishing with 24 points.
The Mavericks are scoring 113.0 points per game which ranks 13th while they’re shooting 47.9% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking third and 17th respectively.
Defensively, Dallas has remained committed to abandoning the offensive glass in exchange for getting back in transition which helps the teams that are strong on the boards.
Still, they hold opponents to 107.4 points per game which ranks a solid sixth. Aside from stopping teams from jumping out into transition, the Mavs are keen to protect the 3-point line.
They’re doing that successfully, holding foes to 33.3 percent from behind the arc ranking sixth overall.
Schematically, they give up more from the mid-range and drives they can’t deter which is why teams are shooting 47.0 percent from the field and ranks 22nd.
Frank Ntilikina (ankle) and Davis Bertains (knee) are questionable Thursday. Christian Wood (leg) didn’t play Wednesday and is likely out again Thursday.
Washington Wizards
Teams searching for an identity typically excel on offense first but that’s the side of the hardwood where the Wizards struggle most.
Specifically, they rank 29th in scoring, averaging 107.0 points per game, ranking 29th. Washington lands in the middle of the pack (14th) for field goal percentage shooting 47.0 percent. Yet, their main deficiency lies at the 3-point arc where they rank 28th shooting 30.6 percent.
A dive into the roster offers sobering news that punctuates those struggles. Monte Morris is the Wizards’ best 3-point sniper, attempting 2.8 triples per game and connecting with 35.5% accuracy. Will Barton takes 3.6 attempts per game shooting 35%.
Both Kyle Kuzma (5.7 attempts) and Kristaps Porzingis (5.2 attempts) shoot with 33.3% accuracy while Bradley Beal who just inked his massive extension and is earning $43.2 million this season is shooting 32.5% on 4.4 attempts. The rest of the roster shoots 28.6% and lower.
To put into perspective how poorly the Wiz shoot from deep, the Nuggets who are ranked first have seven players shooting higher than Morris with five shooting in the 40% plus and of those two are shooting over 50 percent!.
Washington performs better on the defensive end with opponents scoring 111.1 points per game (11th) and holding them to 45.6 percent from the field which ranks top 10 (ninth).
Again it’s the perimeter where they struggle even on defense as opponents shoot a robust 38.2% equating to the 28th rank overall.
Bradley Beal (quarantine) was downgraded to out on Thursday and Delon Wright (hamstring) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Mavericks are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games against Washington.
- Washington is 2-5 SU in their last 7 games.
- Dallas is 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Washington’s last 14 games.
Dallas Mavericks vs. Washington Wizards NBA Analysis:
Throw away the loss to Orlando – it happens. The only part of that loss the Mavericks should retain is taking a team for granted and the red flag of that fourth quarter where they scored just 13 points and highlights a trend of poor final frames.
Although the Mavericks don’t have the same prowess from behind the arc as the Nuggets if Dallas gets open shots they typically nail them (Magic game being an outlier).
A night after losing in embarrassing fashion to Orlando, expect Luka to be on a mission to erase that memory and his performance by replacing it with a winning effort and a big performance.
Suffice it to say, this could be a long night for the Wiz, regardless of their rest advantage.
