Friday, December 31st, finds the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings playing for the second time in three days. Sacramento won the game Wednesday in a one-point battle (95-94) that came down to the wire.
Dallas won the initial meeting between the clubs (105-99) on October 31st and will host their final meeting on March 5th.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Kings sweeping the regular-season series. The Mavericks hold the all-time record having bested the Kings in 97 of their 173 matches.
Dallas Mavericks
When Luka Doncic began his current sojourn off the hardwood it was to allow a sore ankle time to heal. The thinking was he would also use the time to do some conditioning and return in time for the Christmas Day match.
Best laid plans never came to fruition as he entered health and safety protocols and has missed nine consecutive games and counting. Dallas is 4-5 during this segment.
Jalen Brunson and Kristaps Porzingis continued to do the heavy lifting with their superstar absent, scoring 25 and 24 points in the loss to the Kings on Wednesday.
Seven Mavericks are in the NBA health and safety protocols including Luka Doncic, Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber, Reggie Bullock, Trey Burke, Boban Marjanovic, and JaQuori McLaughlin and all seven are questionable for Friday.
Willie Cauley-Stein (personal) is also questionable while Eugene Omoruyi (toe surgery) is out indefinitely.
Sacramento Kings
While De’Aaron Fox was in protocols Tyrese Haliburton re-discovered that mojo he played with as a rookie.
Haliburton has registered a double-double in six of the last seven matches averaging 21.1 points and 10.3 assists plus 3.7 rebounds, and 1.7 steals. Most impressively he shot 47.5% from deep on 5.7 attempts.
While De’Aaron Fox was out in protocols, the Kings’ offense actually looked far more cohesive. Moving forward now that Fox is back can this duo function simultaneously and both be successful?
The Ben Simmons to Sacramento deal never picked up any traction when Buddy Hield or Marvin Bagley was the focus of the trade but would Daryl Morey be more intrigued if Fox was the player attached?
The question is how much his 3-point shooting would matter (or lack thereof) and the overall defensive lapses. Logically, Morey would want Haliburton if he was interested in engaging the Kings — but it’s worth discussing for both clubs.
Most of the Kings who were in protocols have exited except the trio of Alex Len, Davion Mitchell, and Neemias Queta with Len and Mitchell upgraded to probable to play Friday and Queta questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Mavericks are 6-3 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Kings are 6-3 ATS in their last 9 games at home.
- The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Dallas’ last 14 games.
- The Kare 2-5 SU in their last 7 games.
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Sacramento Kings NBA Prediction:
Aside from good health, if the clubs elect to make New Year’s Eve resolutions the Mavericks would be hoping for some playmaking assistance for Doncic while the Kings would be happy to make any roster tweak that equates to pushing them into the postseason.
As for this match, while the speed of the Kings should be a factor versus the Doncic-less Mavericks, coach Jason Kidd will try to slow pace to a crawl.
Whoever wins that battle likely also gets the victory so Sacramento needs to be aggressive on the ball trying to create turnovers and push pace on makes or misses.
