Sunday, December 12th, finds the Dallas Mavericks playing the Oklahoma City Thunder squad for the first time this season.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Mavericks losing 93-106 to the Pacers while the Thunder finally conceded their first game in three meetings to the Lakers losing 95-116.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Mavericks winning two of the three contests. The Thunder hold the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 84 of their 163 matches.
Dallas Mavericks
I was on an island in preseason believing this Mavericks team wasn’t going to be a top Western team because I don’t like the fit of the roster pieces and I don’t trust Kristaps Porzingis can stay healthy.
To quantify, with a superstar like Luka Doncic the Mavs will always be among the teams contending for the playoffs but they aren’t a team, as currently constructed, that will give the Warriors or Suns a challenge to take the West.
In the loss to the Pacers, Doncic flirted with a triple-double via 27 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists but shot 1 of 8 from deep. Porzingis offered 22 points but grabbed only two rebounds.
The other three starters (Dwight Powell, Dorian Finney-Smith, Reggie Bullock) combined to score six points — hence my comments about roster fit! Tim Hardaway Jr. (15) and Jalen Brunson (14) were the other double-figure contributors.
Dallas announced Doncic won’t play Sunday with that ankle still bothering him and this match being the front side of a back-to-back set (Hornets) and the Lakers on tap Wednesday.
Willie Cauley-Stein (personal) and Sterling Brown (foot) are questionable for Sunday.
Oklahoma City Thunder
No one expected the Thunder to beat the Lakers once let alone twice so falling 95-116 to them in their third meeting wasn’t all that surprising. Despite the rout, the highlight of the night was a jaw-dropping dunk by rookie Tre Mann over Wayne Ellington.
The youngster also led the Thunder in scoring with 19 on the night. his rookie counterpart Josh Giddey had a typical night for him with 12 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander saw double teams for most of the match finishing with 11 points. Lu Dort had a horrific night shooting going 4 of 17 and also scored 11 points.
OKC is one of the better rebounding teams, especially on the defensive glass. Although Dallas has a taller squad it’s the Thunder who ranks 10th versus the Mavericks 26th on the glass.
Gilgeous-Alexander leads the Thunder with 21.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.0 steals. His perimeter shooting has regressed from 41.8 percent last season to 29.7 percent his season.
Mike Muscala is the 3-point sniper for OKC shooting a team-best 42.5% on 4.1 attempts but because the team is tanking he doesn’t play in every game.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Mavericks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 3-6-1 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
- The Thunder are 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games.
- The Mavericks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Prediction:
The Mavericks are 0-4 when Doncic is out (Suns twice, Clippers, and Grizzlies) In the latter two matches Dallas held the competition under 100 points but also struggled to score.
They were in each contest losing by six to eight points and Porzingis played in all but the Memphis game. This might be Kidd trying to give Doncic extra rest but he was grimacing a ton this week so it’s more likely he really needs to stay off that ankle.
