Wednesday, December 8th finds the Dallas Mavericks facing the Memphis Grizzlies in their second meeting of the season. In the initial meeting between the clubs on December 4th, the Grizzlies beat the Mavericks 97-90
Memphis last played on Monday building their win streak to five with a 105-90 win versus shorthanded Heat. The Mavericks played the front side of a back-to-back with a 102-99 loss to the Brooklyn Nets.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Grizzlies taking two of the three contests. The Mavericks hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 69 of their 101 matches
Dallas Mavericks
With Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis back on the court and holding a 17 point lead, it seemed like the Mavericks had the win sewn up but they allowed the Nets to erase the deficit and hold them to 13 fourth-quarter points.
Porzingis had a strong game facing a Nets team without much length delivering a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds plus five assists, a steal, and a block.
Doncic collected 28 points, nine assists, and six rebounds. The duo struggled from the perimeter combining for 4 of 16 from deep. Their troubles punctuated the Mavericks’ perimeter issues as they shot 9 of 46 or 19.6 percent.
The last play served as an example of their issues. With over 20 seconds remaining instead of running a quick play at the basket especially with Brooklyn defending the perimeter they made three attempts to hit the long ball.
Dorian Finney-Smith (15), Tim Hardaway Jr (11), Dwight Powell (10), and Jalen Brunson (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
Although neither Doncic or Porzingis are on the injury report it’s notable that Porzingis was limping slightly at the end of the game. Willie Cauley-Stein (personal) and Sterling Brown (foot) are both questionable.
Memphis Grizzlies
Without their cornerstone Ja Morant, head coach Taylor Jenkins got his team to refocus their efforts on defense and it’s paying dividends. Prior to the young star’s injury, the Grizzlies were the worst defensive team in the NBA (they’ve climbed to 25th).
Through the 19 games before Morant got injured Memphis allowed opponents to score an average of 116.3 points per game. Only once did they hold a team under the century mark and in 14 of the 19 games teams scored above 110 points up to as many as 138.
In the last five games, they’ve held four of the five opponents under 100 points, and the team that surpassed it scored 101 (Kings). Their most recent win got some help when Jimmy Butler took a tough fall (uncalled foul) reinjuring his tailbone and forcing him to exit.
All five starters scored in double-figures with Desmond Bane and Dillon Brooks leading the scoring effort, each with 21 points. Although no team wants to suffer injuries especially to their star it might be precisely what Jaren Jackson needed to give him that little shove to take over.
In the last five games, JJJ is averaging 19.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks while shooting 48.4 percent on 3-pointers on 6.2 attempts per game.
In hindsight, Morant’s injury may have unwittingly expedited the ascent of their superstar duo with two bonafide scorers in Bane and Brooks as the counterpunch. The key will be maintaining their defensive effort when Morant returns.
Entering the match Wednesday the Grizz added a few players to the injured list with Brandon Clarke (knee), Kyle Anderson (back) downgraded to out and doubtful respectively. They join Morant (knee), Zaire Williams (knee), and Sam Merrill (ankle).
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
Memphis has the rest advantage and home court but the Mavericks will be playing desperate. The issue is Dallas has issues on both sides of the court this year and that lethal offense they owned a few seasons ago has vanished.
