While the Eastern Conference has launched into their second-round the West is still awaiting one series to finish to cement Round 2 pairings. Sunday, June 6th will resolve those questions as the fourth-seeded LA Clippers host the fifth-place Dallas Mavericks in Game 7.
LA will seek to change the trend of their unusual series where neither team has managed to win at home. The Clippers forced this game with a 104-97 victory on Friday.
Dallas Mavericks
While Rick Carlisle’s move to use an ultra big starting lineup and force the small ball Clippers to beat them has essentially been a masterstroke it failed to be enough on Friday.
A few things combined to help the Clippers and harm the Mavericks. First, although Dallas won the reserve battle they need more than 15 points from that lineup.
Second, Luka Doncic delivered a double-double of 29 points and 11 assists but wasn’t nearly as efficient as he’d been particularly from the perimeter (2 of 9).
But more than anything the refs affected the outcome with an unevenly called match. LA received double the free-throw attempts with 28 versus the Mavericks 14 attempts. In a match that was lost in the closing minutes, those extra 14 free throws were the difference in a game won by seven points.
Replays showed miscues on out of bounds calls that were given to LA as well as uncalled physical defense on Dallas that wasn’t afforded on their defensive end.
As Doncic left the court his scowl spoke volumes and will undoubtedly fuel his effort in Game 7.
Ironically, Kristaps Porzingis who was brought to Dallas to be the secondary option to Doncic was the lone starter not to collect double-figures and remains AWOL offensively in this series although Carlisle states he’s accepted the role of being a floor spacer.
LA Clippers
With their season on the line and the critics throwing barbs at the Clippers for purposely losing in order to play the Mavericks, the team delivered to tie up the series.
That doesn’t mean there won’t be further dissection if they lose Game 7, but for now, the Clippers have postponed that analysis.
Kawhi Leonard was the best player on the court in Game 6 continuing his insanely solid efficiency scoring 45 points on 18 of 25 from the field.
Paul George struggled shooting 6 of 15 but accumulated a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds with six assists. Reggie Jackson proved to be the x-factor scoring 25 points and adding nine rebounds.
That trio scored 90 of the 104 points with the reserve unit collecting only four points. And, while it worked to eek out the victory in Dallas barring another blatant whistle in their favor LA will need others beyond the trio to step up in Game 7.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings.
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these clubs
- The over/under is 2-8 in the last 10 contests between the clubs.
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
Each game in the series has tended to offer distinct advantages either via paint or perimeter scoring and rebounding. However, Game 6 was close in most statistical categories with two exceptions.
Dallas dominated paint scoring 46 to 28 and either tied or won the other statistical categories. As noted above the one advantage LA won was free throw attempts and that combined with Leonard outperforming Doncic led to the victory.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Mavericks +6.5
Ultimately, it feels like whichever superstar has the better game will lift his team to win the series. Leonard has the experience and is only two years removed from a Game 7 walk-off game-winner. Alternatively, Doncic followed up his lowest-scoring game of 19 points with a 42 point, 14 assist performance with his second-lowest scoring effort coming in Game 6.
Both players can take over a game, but Doncic does more to affect all his teammates. I’ve felt throughout this entire series that Doncic was primed to take the next step and what better stage than this to punctuate his ascendance.
