Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks had a game postponed on Wednesday, not because of the coronavirus this time but because of Texas’ statewide power mandate.
Energy is a such a premium in the state after the freezing weather this week that the game against Detroit was postponed. As a result, Dallas will have had four full days off ahead of this game against Houston.
The Mavericks are also finally back to full strength. As a result, they sent rookie Josh Green back to the G-League in a quest to continue to get him steady minutes and develop his play.
After a delayed start to his season receiving from an injury and then a slow shooting start, Kristaps Porzingis has come on to play a little more like the guy Mavericks fans were assuming he would be when he came over in that trade two years ago.
Porzingis is averaging 20 points per game and actually scoring slightly more efficiently than Luka Doncic, who is averaging close to 30.
In eight games this month, Porzingis is averaging nearly 23 points per game on 50 percent from the field, better than 42 percent from three, and 90 percent from the free throw line.
That improved play was making a difference for Dallas, which had won four in a row before dropping a one-possession game to the Pelicans.
Houston Rockets
The Rockets, meanwhile, have lost seven in a row after falling to Philadelphia on Wednesday, 118–113.
Joel Embiid scored 31 for the Sixers. John Wall led the Rockets with 28 and seven assists but Victor Oladipo and PJ Tucker missed the game and Houston could not get enough from the rest.
Of course, Christian Wood remained out. He has been out with a knee injury for the past seven games, which, of course, coincides with the Rockets’ current losing streak.
Wood brought balance to the offense as someone who could score inside and without dribbling the ball much. Without him, Houston has become too dependent on the guards to make plays.
It’s no surprise then that Oladipo is hurt. The Rockets have tried to be careful with Wall but he’s gradually being asked to do more and more just to keep Houston in games.
