The NBA offers a slate of games on Thursday, January 7th including the match between the Dallas Mavericks and the Denver Nuggets who are meeting for the first time in the 2020-21 campaign.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Mavericks winning two out of three. The Mavericks hold the all-time record having won 90 matches of the 176 played.
Dallas Mavericks
Luka Doncic was dealing with some nagging injuries so sat out the match versus the Bulls which the Mavericks lost. He returned to the hardwood looking like he’d had much longer than a single game off and posted his first triple-double of the 2020-21 campaign.
Doncic’s 33 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 assists helped cement the victory over the Rockets. Tim Hardaway came off the bench to score 30 points. Willie Cauley-Stein and Josh Richardson each scored 15 as the only other double-figure scorers.
Although the Mavericks haven’t got out of the gate with the start they wanted the good news is Kristaps Porzingis is nearing a return to the hardwood. The big man’s presence will change the dynamic for Dallas on both ends of the hardwood.
Porzingis has begun working out with the team as he prepares for that return which is expected to occur mid-month. Trey Burke is suffering from an illness that will keep him out of the Thursday match in Denver.
Denver Nuggets
Like the Mavericks the Nuggets have gotten off to a less than ideal start to the 2020-21 campaign and have an identical record as the Mavericks.
Like Doncic the Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic is another rising superstar who could be tagged as a potential MVP. He’s had better luck to start the season from a personal perspective.
Jokic is leading the Nuggets in every key category except blocks (PJ Dozier) averaging 24.1 points, 11.9 assists, 11.7 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and shooting 61.4 percent from the field.
Through seven games he’s achieved triple-doubles on four occasions and netted double-doubles in the other three matches. In the win over the Wolves, he registered 35 points and 15 rebounds.
Will Barton was inserted into the starting rotation and scored 20 points. JaMychal Green (17), Jamal Murray (13), Facundo Campazzo (11), Gary Harris (10), and Paul Millsap (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
With seven players providing balanced scoring the loss of Michael Porter Jr. for the past three games hasn’t been an issue although he’s probable to return Thursday.
Greg Whittington has a left knee sprain that will keep him out indefinitely.
