Thursday, April 8th the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder play for the second time this season. In the initial meeting on February 21st, the Thunder extended their win streak vs. Cleveland (117-101) to five games.
The Thunder holds the all-time record between the squads with 68 victories in 116 meetings. Last season the teams played twice with the Thunder winning both contests.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Entering the match the Cavaliers ended a five-game losing streak with a victory versus the San Antonio Spurs.
It’s a certainty Darius Garland has every game against the Spurs circled on his calendar as he delivered a career-high 37 points in the victory besting his previous best of 29 points also garnered against San Antonio.
Garland typically isn’t the primary scorer as Collin Sexton often calls his own number but he elected to pass to Garland who was hot especially from deep hitting 50 percent of his deep balls (5 of 10). Sexton also got in on the action scoring 22 points.
Isaiah Hartenstein also reached a new benchmark scoring a season-best 16 points. Taurean Prince (14) and Isaac Okoro (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
It was also Kevin Love’s third game back on the hardwood after missing 43 games this season. The vet scored nine points with eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Jarrett Allen is in the concussion protocol program and is listed as day-to-day. Dylan Windler is dealing with a knee injury and is also day-to-day.
Larry Nance is out with an illness.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Thunder have finally figured out a way to tank although it took them more than two-thirds of the season to get there.
While pundits assumed the one team in the West who would be a guaranteed win would be the Thunder they’ve overachieved often with a group of rookies, sophomores, and players who’ve seldom had consistent minutes.
The last three games have all been lost via blowout fashion with the Suns (103-140), Blazers (85-133), and Pistons (108-132) all winning by at least 24 points. Edited to add – a fourth loss occurred on Wednesday to the Hornets — the first time this season OKC has lost four in-a-row
The new tweak OKC made in the recent outing was to give two players just signed to 10-day contracts over 20 minutes each. Forward Jaylen Hoard registered 10 points, six rebounds (four on the offensive glass), a steal, and a block.
Justin Robinson scored nine points with a rebound, two assists, and a steal.
Numerous playoff-bound teams would love to add 10-day contracted players and get that type of production which only punctuates how adept Mark Daigneault prepares his squads and the scouting prowess of VP Sam Presti.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (plantar fasciitis), Dort (concussion protocol), Bazley (shoulder), Horford (shut down) are all expected to miss this game.
