Wednesday, December 1st, finds the Cleveland Cavaliers facing the Miami Heat in their first meeting of this season. Both teams last played on Monday with the Cavaliers beating the Mavericks 114-96 while the Heat hosted and lost 111-120 to the Nuggets.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Heat winning all three contests. The Heat holds the all-time record with 73 wins in 119 matches versus the Cavaliers.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The four games rookie Evan Mobley was out recovering from an injured elbow the Cavaliers lost but as soon as he returned the team has won both matches.
While part of the success is having other players back as well like Lauri Markkanen there is no denying how much better the Cavs are particularly on defense with their talented rookie.
On Monday, they beat a Mavericks team on their court a venue where they’ve won six of nine matches. All five Cavaliers starters and Kevin Love (10) scored in double-figures.
Jarrett Allen led the way with a 28 point, 14 rebound double-double. Markkanen seems to be meshing well with Allen and Mobley as he scored 24 points hitting five 3-pointers adding eight rebounds.
Darius Garland is growing into the leader of this team and while I’m sure they’d prefer to have a healthy Collin Sexton his absence is allowing Garland to shine as the primary playmaker and leader. He registered 18 points and nine assists in the victory.
Mobley contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal, two blocks with the only downside being five turnovers.
Dean Wade (calf) and Cedi Osman (back) are questionable for Wednesday while Collin Sexton (knee) had surgery and is done for the season.
Miami Heat
With the Nuggets in Miami, all the pre-game hype focused on the melee that occurred in Denver between Nikola Jokic and Markieff Morris as they both took cheap shots at one another and Jimmy Butler got riled over the retaliatory hit by Joker.
Other than Jokic’s brothers being in attendance it turned out to be nothing with Morris and Butler out of the lineup and while the reigning MVP was back and got loudly booed he was on his best behavior.
Every team has one team who is a bad matchup for their system and roster compilation and for the Heat that team seems to be the Nuggets who’ve beaten them soundly on both occasions.
Granted, in the second meeting Butler and Herro were out but in the first meeting, Miami had a full roster and got routed then as well.
The other two All-Stars each provided double-doubles with Bam Adebayo registering 24 points and 13 rebounds while Kyle Lowry produced 17 points and 14 assists.
Max Strus (19), Caleb Martin (18), and Gabe Vincent (14) were the other double-figure scorers.
Jimmy Butler (tailbone) and Tyler Herro (illness) missed the game Monday and are questionable for Wednesday and the injury report is growing with Bam Adebayo (thumb) and Dewayne Dedmon (knee) also questionable.
Markieff Morris (neck) and Victor Oladipo (knee) are out indefinitely.

- The total has gone over in 10 of Miami’s last 13 games.
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
As the Nuggets demonstrated the one area Miami seems to struggle against is size and the Cavaliers will bring a trio of bigs to the court who could cause plenty of problems for the Heat especially if Adebayo and Dedmon can’t suit up.
Alternatively, the Heat are one of the better teams at rebounding from bad losses. Of their seven losses, two occurred in overtime, and five were on the road.
Prior to the double-digit loss to the Nuggets on Monday, Miami had lost three times in a similar fashion at Denver and Minnesota and versus the Celtics. In the very next game, they won on two (Jazz, Bulls) of the three occasions and pushed the other match (Lakers) to overtime.
Injuries may limit their ability to replicate that response effort so I’m cautiously picking Miami to win and the Cavaliers to keep the score close. However, if Adebayo and Butler both play it could push the Heat into covering the spread — barely.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Cavaliers +8.5 (unless Adebayo, Butler both play)
