Wednesday, October 20th finds the Cleveland Cavaliers tipping off versus the Memphis Grizzlies in their opening match of the 2021-22 season.
Last season, the squads played twice with each club winning on the other team’s court. The Cavaliers hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 31 of their 49 matches.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Coby Altman sure has a penchant for big men. He astutely jumped on adding Jarrett Allen when the Rockets weren’t keen to obtain him as part of the Harden trade package. Then logically Cleveland selected the best player on the draft board with the third pick taking Evan Mobley.
Where things get a little suspect is the other maneuvers Altman made in the offseason. To wit, he traded for Lauri Markkanen, and then went out and signed Tacko Fall in free agency. Not to belabor the point but this is a club that also has Kevin Love, Ed Davis, and Dean Wade. That’s seven big men, eight if you count Cedi Osman who can play power forward or the center position.
Altman seems equally enamored with guards although Collin Sexton isn’t necessarily among his favorites. Both sides said they wanted to resolve the extension and were equally invested. Yet the trade whispers were more like someone holding a blow horn touting his trade availability. This assumption grew with the deadline passing on the 18th without resolution.
Factor in the addition of Ricky Rubio and it signals Sexton will be a trade priority this season. That the club is short of wing depth lends itself to the belief Cleveland will try to move either Sexton or Love to bolster that part of the roster.
Memphis Grizzlies
Although they were quickly dispensed of in the first round 1-4 by the Jazz it was all the motivation the Grizzlies needed to inspire their efforts to keep ascending the ladder.
Ja Morant has special leadership qualities and his scrappy character resonates throughout the roster with them taking on his identity.
While Memphis recognizes Morant is the face of the organization and has a bonafide 3 and D wing player in Dillon Brooks they made moves this offseason to build the team with a view to long-term success. The main roster move involved trading Jonas Valanciunas for Steven Adams.
It’s time the Grizzlies figure out precisely what they have in Jaren Jackson Jr. and with Adams, they get a serviceable big man who can defend and rebound but opens up the offense for JJJ.
Memphis waived numerous players they received in the deals and also traded Grayson Allen (Bucks), Patrick Beverley (Wolves), Eric Bledsoe/Justise Winslow (Clippers), and Juan Hernangomez (Celtics)
The main incoming players are Jarrett Culver and Sam Merrill via trades plus Zaire Williams (10th) and Santi Aldama (30th) via the draft.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
The Cavaliers are hoping their barrage of big men and guards can summon a similar pathway up the ladder as what the Grizzlies have exhibited in the last two seasons. In preseason, the Cavs were 2-3 while the Grizz were 3-3.
Both clubs had issues consistently scoring last season and come out of preseason with the 24th (Cavs) and 14th (Grizz) ranked offenses while Memphis posted the fourth-best defense. Many opponents won’t have the depth to deal with the sheer size of the Cavs but the Grizz do and conversely will cause Cleveland issues dealing with their speed.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Cavs +7.5
The key to this match will come down to the paint versus the perimeter. Cleveland shot the fewest 3-pointers in preseason while the Grizz attempted just shy of 40. That said, I like the Grizz to take the game but not by 7.5 points especially with Brooks (hand) out due to injury.
