Friday NBA hoops will wrap up with a West Coast nightcap as the Cleveland Cavaliers will take on the Los Angeles Lakers. Both teams have struggled to string wins together lately and will want to start their weekend on a high note.
These teams have only met once this season and it came all the way back on January 25th. Despite being a double digit favorite LA entered the final quarter down 2 points but were able outscore Cleveland thanks to former Cav legend LeBron James. James looked like his prime self pouring in a season high 46 points, 23 of those coming in the 4th quarter, on 19-26 shooting including going 7-11 from 3PT range. On top of that he grabbed 8 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the Lakers to a win in his former arena.
This matchup will look much different as LA has had to deal with injuries to their top two players Anthony Davis and LeBron James and they will continue to be out for several weeks. The injuries have made the Lakers look very venerable and in danger of dropping down the standings before they get them back in the lineup.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Cleveland sits in the 12th spot in the East at 17-27 but are only 6-15 in away games this season. The biggest problem for the Cavaliers this season has been consistency as they lost 13 in a row at one stretch of the year right after cracking an even record. Their last 6 games also go as followed L,W,L,W,L,W which seems to be the expectation for this team.
They did win their last game on Wednesday in Chicago by a score of 103-94 thanks to an 8 point advantage in the 3rd quarter to give them some breathing room. Darius Garland scored a game high 22 points to go along with 9 assists and Larry Nance Jr. recorded a bigtime double double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Collin Sexton missed the game due to hamstring soreness.
Allen struggled coming out of the all-star break, being held to single digits in four straight games. He’s showing signs of life lately though, with a 15+ point double-double in 3 of the last 4 games. His recent performance and upside potential has led to rumors of the Cavs looking to sign the big man long term to a 100M+ contract.
Los Angeles Lakers
LA seems to be treading water as of late as they continue to wait for All-Stars Anthony Davis (achilles) and LeBron James (ankle) to return from injuries. James was carrying the load for the team but was injured on Saturday against the Atlanta Hawks when Soloman Hill lunged for a loose ball but instead landed on James right ankle.
Including the Atlanta game, LA has now lost 3 straight games including the last 2 by double digits after losing to Phoenix on Sunday 111-94 and New Orleans 128-111 on Tuesday. The final score doesn’t even do the game justice as the Pelicans held a 25+ point lead for most of the game.
The Lakers were in several trade talks as the Thursday 3pm deadline approached but were unable to get anything finalized. Their most ambitious trade was for Toronto Raptors longtime point guard Kyle Lowry centered around a package for Dennis Schroder and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope but it ended when the Lakers were not willing to give up Talen Horton-Tucker.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Cleveland is 4-6 SU in last 10 games
- LA is 5-5 SU in last 10 games
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
LA is in some trouble with James and Davis especially in the loaded Western Conference as several of the other teams made big trades at the deadline and the Lakers did not. That being said this roster is still no scrubs and have the ability beat inferior opponents which is exactly what Cleveland is.
The Cavaliers are not consistent at all and won their last game which by their standards makes them in line to lose this one. Additionally, Collin Sexton is the teams best player and missed the last game and is uncertain for this one which would make a big difference. I’m taking LA to grab their first win without their superstar duo at home Friday.
