The Cavaliers came out hot against Oklahoma City on Wednesday night at the Thunder’s place, scoring twenty-eight points in the first quarter and taking a seven-point lead. They couldn’t maintain that pace, though, and managed just fifty-five points for the remaining three quarters.
Cleveland was severely short-handed with injuries to George Hill, David Nwaba and Sam Dekker. Then, before the game, it was announced the front office had traded Kyle Korver to the Jazz for Alec Burks and two second round draft picks.
He’s a downgrade from Korver, but Burks has some scoring ability and I’m actually a little bullish on what he’ll be able to do in Cleveland, where he’ll have opportunity aplenty.
The Young Bull, Collin Sexton has been sizzling from the field of late. He’s hit double-digits in ten consecutive games, including at least twenty-one in three of his last four. He’s shooting a lot of mid-range but hitting at a barely acceptable forty-five percent.
He’ll really become more dangerous if he continues to improve his three-point shooting so that he can maintain his better than forty percent in greater volume and, even more importantly, get to the line more. He’s got shifty handles and the speed to shoot eight, nine, ten free throws per game, once he earns the respect of officials.
Most NBA teams beat the Cavs easily but Boston hasn’t made anything look easy in the first quarter of the season.
The Celtics did defeat the Pelicans on Monday, 124–107, so they have a little momentum and a lot of rest ahead of this game at home. They overcame fifty-two points from Anthony Davis and Nikola Mirotic, combined. Al Horford, Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum and Marcus Morris all had at least nineteen points in another balanced scoring night for Boston.
It’s not going to click immediately for the Celtics. They’re going through growing pains but it’s going to work out. There’s just way too much talent for Brad Stevens to fail. Egos really don’t seem to be the problem, either.
More so than anything, the Celtics have missed lots of open looks. The schedule hasn’t been simple, either, but it’s about to get easier. This should be an easy win and then the C’s go to Minnesota before playing the Knicks and Bulls with games against the Wizards and Hawks looming. I’m looking for Boston to go on a little eight-out-of-ten run, or something similar.
