Sunday, December 19th, finds the Cleveland Cavaliers facing the Atlanta Hawks in their second meeting of the season. In the initial match on October 23rd, the Cavs won 101-95.
The clubs will play two more times this season at Cleveland on New Year’s Eve and in Atlanta on February 15th.
The Hawks last played Friday in a 115-133 losing effort to the Nuggets while the Cavaliers played the front side of a back-to-back set easily defeating (119-90) the shorthanded Bucks.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Cavaliers taking two of the three contests. The Hawks hold the all-time record with 124 wins in 233 matches.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Although the Cavaliers were playing without outstanding rookie Evan Mobley they easily torched the shorthanded Bucks who were missing their Big 3 and several others due to health and safety protocols.
Mobley was already a question mark with a sore hip but he too entered health and safety protocols as per the team update Saturday.
In the win versus the Bucks, five Cavaliers reached double-figures with reserve Cedi Osman leading the way scoring 23 points. Darius Garland captained his team with 22 points, four rebounds, six assists, and a steal.
Veterans Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio each tallied 15 points while Jarrett Allen scored 14 as the other double-figure contributor. The ball was zipping on Saturday as the Cavs produced 36 assists plus showcased their dominance in the paint outscoring the Bucks 46 to 34.
Mobley and Isaac Okoro are both in health and safety protocols making their presence Sunday unlikely while Collin Sexton (knee) is lost for the season.
Atlanta Hawks
The thrashing by the Nuggets had Hawks head coach Nate McMillan fired up about his team’s effort specifically in terms of the defensive side of the hardwood. McMillan cited a lack of effort on defense and stated his charges let the offense dictate their energy.
He noted it was the first time this season he’s questioned their effort and how concerning the loss to Denver was.
Perhaps the timing of his comment was based on the upcoming opponent given the Cavaliers are ALL about effort and playing lock-down defense.
Trae Young led the way for the Hawks in the loss to the Nuggets with a double-double of 34 points and 10 assists. A trio of Hawks posted double-doubles including John Collins (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Clint Capela (15 points, 11 rebounds).
Onyeka Okongwu was the only other double-figure scorer with 10 points.
Trae Young (ankle) and Bogdan Bogdanovic (ankle) are questionable for Sunday. DeAndre Hunter (wrist) is out indefinitely while Solomon Hill (hamstring) is out for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
One of the few teams who has the size to deal with the Cavaliers is the Hawks and given the missive coach McMillan threw down after the oust by the Nuggets now would be the time to show up with a strong defensive effort especially considering they have the rest advantage.
That said, the Cavs weren’t taxed on Saturday and will be a tough opponent – so I’ll tenuously take the Hawks but the Cavs will keep it close.
